Feeling a rough or thick sensation inside the anus?

During my shower today, I inserted my finger into my rectum for cleaning and noticed that the walls on both sides felt slightly rough.
Is this normal? It doesn't feel very rough, but it's not as smooth as the inside of my mouth.
However, I don't have any issues with constipation or blood in my stool.
I previously used a fecal occult blood test and there was no indication of bleeding.
Also, could you please tell me how accurate fecal occult blood tests are? Thank you.

Understanding abnormal sensations in the rectal area can be concerning, especially when you notice changes during routine hygiene practices. It’s important to approach this topic with a clear understanding of what might be considered normal and when to seek medical advice.

First, the sensation of a slightly rough texture when you touch the rectal walls is not uncommon. The rectal mucosa, which lines the inside of the rectum, can have varying textures due to several factors, including the presence of normal anatomical structures like folds (plicae) or the presence of small hemorrhoids or other benign conditions. The rectal wall is not as smooth as the oral mucosa, which is why you may notice a difference in texture. If you are not experiencing any pain, bleeding, or significant changes in bowel habits, this sensation may not be a cause for concern.

However, it’s essential to monitor any changes. If the roughness becomes more pronounced, or if you start experiencing symptoms such as pain, bleeding, or changes in bowel habits (like constipation or diarrhea), it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough examination and determine if any further investigation is necessary.

Regarding the use of fecal occult blood tests (FOBT), these tests are designed to detect hidden blood in the stool, which can be an indicator of various gastrointestinal issues, including polyps, hemorrhoids, or colorectal cancer. The accuracy of these tests can vary based on several factors, including the type of test used and the presence of certain dietary factors or medications that might affect the results. Generally, FOBTs are considered reliable screening tools, but they are not definitive. A positive result typically leads to further diagnostic procedures, such as a colonoscopy, to investigate the source of the bleeding.

It’s also worth noting that factors such as diet, hydration, and overall gastrointestinal health can influence bowel movements and the appearance of stool. A diet high in fiber and adequate hydration can help maintain regular bowel movements and prevent issues like constipation, which can lead to straining and potential rectal discomfort.

In summary, while the sensation you described may not be abnormal, it’s essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your body. If you have concerns about the texture you felt or if you experience any new symptoms, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and determine if any further evaluation is necessary. Additionally, while fecal occult blood tests are useful screening tools, they should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical findings and follow-up testing as needed.
