Phlegm in the throat?
Recently, due to having more classes, I have been using my voice more frequently.
I often feel phlegm in my throat, but I can't seem to cough it out.
I have also visited an otolaryngologist, but the condition has not improved.

More Info
Persistent phlegm in the throat can be a frustrating and uncomfortable condition, often leading to a feeling of constant throat clearing or the sensation of something stuck in the throat. This condition can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help in finding effective solutions.
Causes of Persistent Phlegm in the Throat
1. Postnasal Drip: One of the most common causes of persistent phlegm is postnasal drip, where mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat. This can be triggered by allergies, sinus infections, or even changes in weather.
2. Allergies: Allergic reactions to pollen, dust, pet dander, or mold can lead to increased mucus production. This can manifest as a persistent cough or the feeling of phlegm in the throat.
3. Infections: Viral infections, such as the common cold or flu, can cause increased mucus production. Bacterial infections, such as sinusitis or bronchitis, can also contribute to this issue.
4. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and lead to increased mucus production as a protective response. This can result in a sensation of phlegm in the throat.
5. Environmental Irritants: Exposure to smoke, pollution, or strong odors can irritate the throat and lead to increased mucus production.
6. Chronic Conditions: Conditions such as chronic bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can lead to persistent mucus production.
Solutions and Management
1. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus, making it easier to expel. Drinking warm fluids, such as herbal teas or broths, can be particularly soothing.
2. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam can help moisten the airways and loosen mucus. This can be done by taking a hot shower or using a humidifier.
3. Saline Nasal Rinse: Using a saline nasal spray or rinse can help clear mucus from the nasal passages and reduce postnasal drip.
4. Avoid Irritants: Reducing exposure to environmental irritants, such as smoke or strong odors, can help alleviate symptoms.
5. Over-the-Counter Medications: Antihistamines can help if allergies are the cause, while expectorants can help thin mucus. However, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
6. Dietary Changes: Avoiding foods that trigger acid reflux, such as spicy or fatty foods, can help if GERD is a contributing factor. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can also be beneficial.
7. Consultation with Specialists: If symptoms persist despite home remedies, it may be necessary to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or a gastroenterologist for further evaluation and treatment options.
8. Voice Rest: If increased use of the voice is contributing to throat irritation, taking breaks and practicing voice rest can help reduce strain.
9. Allergy Testing: If allergies are suspected, undergoing allergy testing can help identify specific triggers, allowing for targeted treatment.
Conclusion
Persistent phlegm in the throat can stem from a variety of causes, including postnasal drip, allergies, infections, and GERD. Addressing the underlying cause is crucial for effective management. Implementing lifestyle changes, staying hydrated, and seeking medical advice when necessary can significantly improve symptoms. If you have already consulted an ENT specialist and your symptoms persist, it may be worthwhile to revisit them or seek a second opinion to explore other potential causes and treatments.
