The eruption of wisdom teeth can lead to crowding of the lower teeth?
Hello Doctor, my lower left wisdom tooth has erupted about 3/4, but the upper left wisdom tooth has only erupted a little bit.
Currently, the lower left wisdom tooth has caused misalignment of my lower front teeth, and it has established occlusion with the upper left second molar (since the upper left wisdom tooth has not fully erupted).
The teeth on the lower left side are being pushed forward by the wisdom tooth.
I previously had both right side wisdom teeth extracted.
Can the lower left wisdom tooth be extracted? After extraction, will it cause the upper left second molar to occlude with the lower gum?

Hello: Based on your description, I still recommend that you have your left wisdom tooth extracted.
As for the occlusion issue, it needs to be discussed based on clinical observation.
Wishing you safety and good health.

The issue of impacted wisdom teeth and their potential impact on dental crowding is a common concern among patients. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood. When there is insufficient space in the jaw for these teeth to erupt properly, they can become impacted, leading to various dental problems, including crowding of adjacent teeth.
In your case, it appears that your left lower wisdom tooth is partially erupted and has begun to affect the alignment of your lower front teeth. This is a common scenario where the wisdom tooth exerts pressure on the surrounding teeth, causing them to shift out of their natural alignment. The upper left wisdom tooth, which has not fully erupted, may also contribute to this issue by creating an uneven bite or occlusion.
1. Can Extraction Solve Crowding Issues?
Yes, extracting the impacted wisdom tooth can potentially alleviate some of the crowding issues you are experiencing. By removing the source of pressure, the adjacent teeth may have the opportunity to realign themselves naturally over time. However, it is essential to understand that extraction alone may not completely resolve crowding, especially if there are other underlying factors contributing to the misalignment of your teeth.
2. Post-Extraction Concerns:
After the extraction of the left lower wisdom tooth, there is a concern about whether the upper second molar will bite down on the lower gums. This is a valid concern, particularly if the upper tooth is positioned lower than it should be due to the presence of the impacted wisdom tooth. In many cases, the body will adjust over time, and the upper tooth may naturally move into a more appropriate position. However, this process can vary from person to person.
3. Consultation with Your Dentist:
It is crucial to have a thorough discussion with your dentist or oral surgeon regarding your specific situation. They can assess the positioning of your teeth through X-rays and provide a more tailored recommendation based on your dental anatomy. They may also discuss the potential need for orthodontic treatment after extraction to help realign your teeth properly.
4. Long-Term Considerations:
If you choose to keep the impacted wisdom tooth, it is essential to monitor it regularly. Impacted teeth can lead to complications such as infections, cysts, or damage to adjacent teeth. If the tooth is not causing any immediate issues, some dentists may recommend a wait-and-see approach, but this should be done under careful observation.
5. Orthodontic Evaluation:
If crowding is a significant concern, an orthodontic evaluation may be beneficial. An orthodontist can provide insights into whether braces or other orthodontic treatments are necessary to achieve optimal alignment after the extraction of the wisdom tooth.
In conclusion, while extracting the impacted wisdom tooth can help alleviate some crowding issues, it is essential to have a comprehensive evaluation by your dental care provider. They can guide you through the decision-making process and help you understand the potential outcomes of extraction and any necessary follow-up treatments. Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are crucial for your overall dental health, especially when dealing with impacted teeth.
