How long after a miscarriage does ovulation occur?

Hello Doctor, I am 5 weeks pregnant.
On September 22, I took the first dose of RU486, and on September 24, I took medication to induce uterine contractions.
On October 1, I went to the hospital for a check-up, and the doctor said the embryo had passed, but there were still some dark blood clots, so they prescribed me more contraction medication.
Currently, I am still experiencing some bleeding.
However, on October 2, I had unprotected intercourse with my husband.
I am a bit worried about the possibility of becoming pregnant again.
Should I take emergency contraception? I would appreciate your assistance in answering this question.
Thank you.

Typically, one should wait until the miscarriage is complete before ovulating again, which usually takes about two weeks.
It is estimated that the miscarriage will be fully complete by early October, and ovulation may occur two weeks later, around October 20th or later, making it possible to conceive again.
For now, pregnancy is unlikely, and there is no need to take emergency contraception.

After a miscarriage, the timing of ovulation can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, ovulation can occur as soon as two weeks after a miscarriage, but it may take longer for some individuals. The body needs time to recover from the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy and miscarriage, and this recovery period can influence when ovulation resumes.

In your case, since you experienced a miscarriage at approximately five weeks of pregnancy and are still experiencing some bleeding, it is essential to monitor your body’s signals. The presence of bleeding can indicate that your body is still in the process of expelling the remaining tissue from the uterus, which may affect your hormonal balance and, consequently, your ovulation cycle.

Typically, after a miscarriage, the first menstrual cycle can take anywhere from four to six weeks to return, depending on how quickly your hormone levels normalize. The hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy, needs to decrease to non-pregnant levels before your body can ovulate again. If you are still experiencing bleeding, it is likely that your body is still in the process of recovery.

Regarding your concern about having unprotected intercourse shortly after the miscarriage, it is possible to conceive if you ovulate before your next period. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you ovulate soon after having intercourse, there is a chance of becoming pregnant again. If you are worried about the possibility of another pregnancy and are not ready for that, taking emergency contraception (commonly known as the "morning-after pill") may be an option. However, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication, especially after a miscarriage, to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your situation.

In summary, while ovulation can occur as early as two weeks after a miscarriage, it is essential to consider your current physical state and any ongoing symptoms. If you have concerns about your recovery, potential pregnancy, or the use of emergency contraception, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current condition, ensuring you receive the appropriate care and guidance during this time.
