Can I engage in diving activities after surgery for a thyroid nodule?
Hello Doctor: I underwent a thyroid nodule excision surgery on September 23, was discharged on September 25, and returned for a follow-up appointment on September 29 to have my stitches removed and to review the report, which indicated that the findings were benign.
After the stitches were removed, the doctor advised that I only need to change the breathable tape regularly and that I can also get the area wet now.
I feel that my wound is healing very quickly! It is itchy but not painful! May I participate in diving activities from October 14 to October 16?

More Info
After undergoing thyroid nodule surgery, many patients are eager to return to their normal activities, including diving. In your case, since you had the surgery on September 23 and were discharged two days later, followed by a follow-up appointment where your stitches were removed and the pathology report indicated a benign condition, it sounds like your recovery is progressing well. Your surgeon's advice to change the breathable bandage regularly and the fact that you can already come into contact with water are positive signs of healing.
Generally, the decision to dive after thyroid surgery depends on several factors, including the extent of the surgery, the healing process of the incision, and any potential complications that may arise. Here are some considerations:
1. Wound Healing: Since you mentioned that your wound is healing well, is not painful, and only feels itchy, these are good indicators that you may be ready to resume activities like diving. However, it is crucial to ensure that the incision site is fully healed and that there are no signs of infection or complications.
2. Physical Fitness: Diving can be physically demanding, and it is essential to ensure that you feel physically fit and capable of handling the exertion involved in diving. If you are experiencing any unusual fatigue or discomfort, it may be wise to postpone diving until you feel completely recovered.
3. Medical Clearance: It is always best to consult with your surgeon or healthcare provider before engaging in activities like diving. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and recovery progress. They may also want to assess your overall health and any potential risks associated with diving post-surgery.
4. Diving Considerations: Diving involves changes in pressure, which can affect the body differently, especially after surgery. Ensure that you are aware of any specific contraindications related to diving after thyroid surgery. For example, if you experience any symptoms like dizziness, shortness of breath, or unusual heart rhythms, it is crucial to avoid diving and seek medical attention.
5. Timing: Given that your surgery was in late September and you are considering diving in mid-October, this timeframe seems reasonable for a return to normal activities, provided you have received medical clearance. However, every individual heals at their own pace, and it is essential to listen to your body.
In conclusion, while it seems that you are on the right track for a return to diving, it is imperative to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can assess your recovery and provide guidance on whether it is safe for you to dive at this time. Remember, safety should always come first, especially after surgery. Enjoy your recovery and stay safe!
