Penile varicosities
I noticed that the veins on my penis suddenly became very prominent the day before yesterday.
I looked it up online and it seems to be in the area of the superficial dorsal vein, but I'm not very sure...
I would like to know if this condition is possible.
Should I see a urologist for this? Thank you very much!

Dr. Sun Hongshun reply Urology
The penis naturally contains many blood vessels.
I'm not sure what might have caused those blood vessels to become enlarged in your case.
Could it be uncomfortable? If you have any questions, you can consult a urologist.

More Info
Penile varicosities, or the sudden enlargement of veins in the penile area, can be concerning for many individuals. The condition you are describing, where the veins appear to be more prominent or engorged, can occur for several reasons. Understanding the potential causes and knowing when to seek medical help is crucial for your health and peace of mind.
Causes of Penile Varicosities
1. Increased Blood Flow: Physical arousal or sexual activity can lead to increased blood flow to the penis, causing the veins to become more prominent temporarily. This is a normal physiological response.
2. Venous Insufficiency: This condition occurs when the veins struggle to return blood to the heart, leading to pooling of blood in the veins. It can cause the veins to become enlarged and may be associated with discomfort or heaviness.
3. Trauma or Injury: Any trauma to the genital area can lead to swelling of the veins. This could be due to vigorous sexual activity, sports, or accidents.
4. Varicocele: Although more commonly associated with the scrotum, varicoceles can also affect the veins in the penile area. This condition is characterized by enlarged veins due to valve dysfunction within the veins.
5. Infection or Inflammation: Conditions such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other inflammatory conditions can lead to swelling and prominence of the veins.
6. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as obesity, chronic cough, or heart disease can contribute to venous problems, including varicosities.
When to Seek Help
While some cases of penile varicosities may be benign and temporary, there are specific situations where it is essential to seek medical attention:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the enlarged veins do not return to their normal size after a reasonable period or if they are accompanied by pain, discomfort, or other unusual symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
- Changes in Color or Texture: If you notice any changes in the color of the skin over the veins or if the veins feel hard or tender, these could be signs of a more serious condition.
- Swelling or Lumps: If you develop any lumps or significant swelling in the area, it is important to have these evaluated.
- Associated Symptoms: If you experience other symptoms such as fever, chills, or any systemic symptoms, you should seek medical attention promptly.
Which Specialist to See
For concerns regarding penile varicosities, the appropriate specialist to consult is a urologist. Urologists specialize in the male reproductive system and urinary tract, and they can provide a thorough evaluation, including physical examinations and possibly imaging studies if necessary. They can help determine the underlying cause of the varicosities and recommend appropriate treatment options.
Conclusion
In summary, while penile varicosities can be a normal occurrence due to various factors, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If you notice persistent changes, discomfort, or any concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice from a urologist. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and provide peace of mind. Remember, your health is paramount, and it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body.
