Occipital bone lump
Yesterday, during class, I suddenly felt some pain in the left back of my head.
When I touched it, I noticed it was slightly swollen (about 6 to 7 centimeters from my left ear).
What could this be?

When you experience a sudden bump on the back of your head, especially accompanied by pain, it can be concerning. There are several potential causes for this condition, and understanding them can help you determine the appropriate course of action.
One common cause of a bump on the back of the head is a hematoma, which is a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels. This can occur due to trauma, such as bumping your head against a hard surface. Even minor injuries can lead to a hematoma, which may not be immediately apparent. The pain associated with a hematoma can vary from mild to severe, depending on the size and location of the collection.
Another possibility is a cyst, such as a sebaceous cyst, which is a non-cancerous lump filled with keratin and can occur anywhere on the body, including the scalp. These cysts are usually painless unless they become inflamed or infected. If the bump is soft and movable, it may be a cyst rather than a more serious condition.
In some cases, a bump may indicate an infection, such as a scalp infection or lymphadenopathy, where lymph nodes in the neck or behind the ears become swollen due to an underlying infection. This can be accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, redness, or warmth in the area.
Less commonly, a bump on the head could be associated with more serious conditions such as tumors or abscesses. While these are rarer, they can present with localized pain and swelling. If the bump is hard, fixed, and does not change over time, it is essential to seek medical evaluation to rule out these possibilities.
Given your description of the bump being located approximately 6-7 cm from your left ear and the sudden onset of pain, it is advisable to monitor the situation closely. If the bump persists, increases in size, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as severe headache, dizziness, nausea, or changes in vision, you should seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare professional may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to assess the underlying cause of the bump and any associated symptoms.
In summary, while a bump on the back of the head can be due to various benign causes such as a hematoma or cyst, it is crucial to be vigilant about any changes in the bump or accompanying symptoms. If you have any doubts or concerns, consulting with a healthcare provider is the best course of action to ensure your health and peace of mind.
