Foreign body on the areola?
Recently, I noticed a bump on the areola of my right breast that looks like a pimple.
Upon closer inspection, there are small black dots inside it.
After accidentally squeezing it, a yellowish pus came out, and when I squeezed it again, a little blood came out.
There is a small hole at the wound, and it still has a dark color, similar to bruising.
Should I seek medical attention for this?

It is recommended to conduct an in-person examination at the outpatient clinic, as a literal response may not be sufficient.

When it comes to unusual bumps or changes on the areola, such as the one you described, it is important to take these symptoms seriously and consider seeking medical attention. The presence of a bump that resembles a pimple, especially one that has a black dot, oozes pus, and has blood, can indicate several potential conditions that require evaluation by a healthcare professional.
Firstly, the bump you described could be a sebaceous cyst, which is a common benign growth that can occur in various parts of the body, including the breast area. These cysts can become inflamed or infected, leading to pus formation and sometimes bleeding. However, the presence of a black dot could also suggest the possibility of a clogged pore or an ingrown hair, which can also lead to similar symptoms.
Another possibility is that the bump could be related to a condition known as Montgomery glands, which are small sebaceous glands located on the areola. These glands can sometimes become enlarged or clogged, leading to the formation of bumps. While these are typically harmless, any changes in the appearance or texture of the skin should be evaluated.
However, it is crucial to consider the possibility of more serious conditions, such as infections or even breast cancer. Although breast cancer is less common in younger individuals, any persistent changes in the breast tissue, especially those accompanied by pain, discharge, or changes in skin color, should be assessed by a healthcare provider. The fact that you mentioned a small hole and bruising-like discoloration raises concern and warrants further investigation.
In terms of when to seek medical attention, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional if you experience any of the following:
1. Persistent Symptoms: If the bump does not improve or worsens over time, it is important to seek evaluation.
2. Increased Pain or Discomfort: If you experience significant pain, swelling, or tenderness in the area, this could indicate an infection or other underlying issue.
3. Changes in Appearance: If the bump changes in size, color, or texture, or if you notice any new symptoms, such as fever or chills, it is essential to get checked.
4. Discharge: If there is ongoing discharge from the bump, especially if it is bloody or foul-smelling, this is a sign that you should seek medical attention promptly.
In conclusion, while some bumps on the areola may be benign, the symptoms you described—especially the presence of pus, blood, and discoloration—suggest that it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging or a biopsy if necessary, to determine the exact nature of the bump and recommend appropriate treatment. Early evaluation can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly and effectively.
