Feeling a lump in the throat?

Hello, doctor.
Since yesterday, I've been feeling a sensation of something stuck in my throat.
I have a history of nasal allergies, and sometimes I wake up in the morning with nasal congestion that lasts until the afternoon.
Yesterday, I happened to have nasal congestion, and while I didn't feel the throat discomfort from morning until afternoon, after the congestion cleared, I started feeling the sensation in my throat.
It has persisted from yesterday afternoon until now.
It doesn't hurt, but I feel like there's something in my throat when I swallow saliva.
I've tried coughing forcefully, but nothing comes out.
I also tried drinking hot water, but about a minute after drinking, I feel the sensation again.
Just now, I took a shower and used a warm towel for compress, which helped a bit, but I still feel some discomfort.
I haven't had any previous throat issues, so I would like to ask the doctor what I should do about this situation.

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology

Hello, the situation you described may be caused by chronic pharyngitis, which commonly arises from 1) post-nasal drip due to nasal allergies and 2) gastroesophageal reflux or laryngopharyngeal reflux.
It is recommended to undergo a laryngoscopy to rule out any masses and to consider medication treatment.
In addition to medication and managing nasal allergies, daily lifestyle precautions include avoiding lying down for two hours after eating.
Please also avoid coffee, tea, cigarettes, alcohol, fried foods, and spicy foods, as these can help improve symptoms.
Wishing you peace and good health.

Sincerely,
Dr.
Chi Chao-Yun,
Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing some discomfort in your throat, which can be quite bothersome. Based on your description, it seems that your throat discomfort may be related to your nasal congestion, which is a common issue for individuals with allergies. Let's break down the potential causes and remedies for your symptoms.

Possible Causes of Throat Discomfort
1. Postnasal Drip: This is one of the most common causes of throat discomfort, especially in individuals with nasal allergies. When your nasal passages are congested, mucus can drip down the back of your throat, leading to a sensation of something being stuck or a "tickle" in the throat. This can happen more prominently when you are lying down or when you wake up in the morning.

2. Allergic Rhinitis: Given your history of nasal allergies, it's possible that your throat discomfort is a result of allergic rhinitis. Allergens can cause inflammation in the nasal passages, leading to congestion and postnasal drip, which can irritate the throat.

3. Dry Air: If the air in your environment is dry, especially during the winter months or in air-conditioned spaces, this can lead to throat irritation. Dry air can cause the mucous membranes in your throat to become dry and scratchy.

4. Infections: While you mentioned that your throat does not hurt, it's still worth noting that viral infections (like the common cold) can cause throat discomfort. However, these are usually accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, cough, or body aches.

Remedies for Throat Discomfort
1. Stay Hydrated: Continue to drink plenty of fluids. Warm beverages like herbal tea or warm water with honey can be soothing for your throat. Honey has natural antibacterial properties and can help coat the throat.

2. Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam can help relieve nasal congestion and soothe your throat. You can do this by taking a hot shower or using a bowl of hot water. Lean over the bowl with a towel over your head to trap the steam and breathe deeply.

3. Saline Nasal Spray: Using a saline nasal spray can help moisten your nasal passages and reduce congestion. This may help alleviate postnasal drip and the associated throat discomfort.

4. Humidifier: If dry air is a concern, consider using a humidifier in your home, especially in your bedroom while you sleep. This can help keep the air moist and reduce throat irritation.

5. Warm Compress: As you mentioned, using a warm towel to compress your throat can provide temporary relief. This can help relax the muscles and reduce discomfort.

6. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate your throat discomfort and nasal congestion.

7. Over-the-Counter Remedies: If your symptoms persist, consider using over-the-counter antihistamines to help with your nasal allergies. Decongestants may also provide relief from nasal congestion, but consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.

When to Seek Medical Attention
If your throat discomfort persists for more than a week, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as fever, difficulty swallowing, or breathing issues, it is important to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough evaluation and determine if further treatment is necessary.

In conclusion, your throat discomfort is likely related to your nasal congestion and allergies. By implementing some of the remedies mentioned above, you should find relief. Remember to listen to your body and seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve. Take care!
