Japanese encephalitis vaccine and influenza vaccine?

Hello Dr.
Hsiao: My baby is currently 1 year and 5 months old.
Two weeks ago, we received the first dose of the Japanese encephalitis vaccine at a health center in Taipei.
Now we are in Taichung and would like to know if there are any issues with receiving the second dose of the Japanese encephalitis vaccine here.
Is the vaccine the same? Also, is it possible to administer the second dose along with the influenza vaccine? Thank you, Dr.
Hsiao!

Kai Ma, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/10/14

Dr. Xiao Kaiwen reply Pediatrics

Currently, all publicly funded Japanese encephalitis vaccines in Taiwan are the same, so it is permissible to receive the vaccine at different locations.
The influenza vaccine and the Japanese encephalitis vaccine can be administered simultaneously at different sites.

More Info

Yes, your child can receive the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine and the flu vaccine together. According to current medical guidelines, it is safe to administer these two vaccines at the same time, either in different injection sites or even in the same visit. There is no evidence to suggest that receiving these vaccines together will diminish their effectiveness or increase the risk of adverse effects.
When it comes to the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, it is important to ensure that your child receives the second dose within the recommended timeframe. The JE vaccine is typically administered in a two-dose series for children, with the second dose given 7 to 28 days after the first dose. It is crucial to follow the vaccination schedule to ensure optimal immunity against the disease.

Regarding your concern about the vaccines being the same, it is advisable to check with the healthcare provider or the vaccination center to confirm that the vaccine used in Taichung is the same formulation as the one administered in Taipei. Vaccines can vary by manufacturer, and while they may be effective against the same disease, it is always best to ensure consistency in the vaccine type for the series.

In addition to the safety of simultaneous vaccination, it is also worth noting that both the JE vaccine and the flu vaccine are vital for your child's health. The JE vaccine protects against a serious viral infection that can lead to inflammation of the brain, while the flu vaccine helps prevent influenza, which can also have severe complications in young children.
It is common for parents to have questions about vaccine schedules and combinations, especially with the various vaccines available. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) provide guidelines that support the co-administration of vaccines, which can help streamline the vaccination process and ensure that children receive the necessary immunizations without unnecessary delays.

In summary, your child can safely receive the Japanese Encephalitis and flu vaccines together. Just ensure that the second dose of the JE vaccine is administered within the recommended timeframe, and confirm the vaccine type with your healthcare provider. Vaccination is a crucial step in protecting your child's health, and staying up-to-date with the immunization schedule is essential for their well-being. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
