Prolonged menstruation
Hello, I am 23 years old and my menstrual cycle has been very regular over the past few years, with a consistent flow and cycle length.
However, during this menstrual period, I accidentally consumed sesame oil (in the past, I had a period that lasted two weeks due to consuming too much nourishing food).
This time, I only had a few bites, but my period was supposed to end already.
It has now lasted for 12 days, and since around the 7th day (when it was supposed to end), I have been experiencing a very light flow.
The amount is minimal, just a little bit, and sometimes when I wipe after urinating, there is no color at all.
I have repeatedly thought it was ending, but it has remained in this state for almost a week now, which makes me a bit worried.
Additionally, I have been staying up late and experiencing some work-related stress, and I wonder if this could also be a factor.
Could you please help clarify this for me? Thank you.

Hello, Miss Anonymous: It's hard to say if your situation is caused by eating a few bites of sesame oil.
However, generally speaking, it is possible that this menstrual cycle is an anovulatory cycle, which could explain the difference in duration compared to previous cycles.
Factors such as staying up late, irregular schedules, high stress, and illness can all potentially affect ovulation, leading to menstrual irregularities.
Since the flow has decreased, I recommend waiting another week to see if it resolves.
If it doesn't, you should consult a gynecologist.

Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing some concerning changes in your menstrual cycle, and it's completely understandable to feel worried about it. Let's break down the potential causes and concerns regarding prolonged menstruation, especially for young women like yourself.
Firstly, it's important to recognize that menstrual cycles can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, diet, and lifestyle changes. In your case, you mentioned that your cycle has been regular for the past few years, which is a positive sign. However, the recent episode of prolonged menstruation lasting 12 days, especially after consuming a small amount of sesame oil, raises some questions.
1. Dietary Influence: While certain foods can affect menstrual cycles, the amount you consumed seems minimal. It's unlikely that a few bites of sesame oil would cause such a significant change in your cycle. However, if you have a history of experiencing prolonged menstruation after consuming rich or "heaty" foods, it might be worth monitoring your diet more closely in the future.
2. Stress and Lifestyle: You mentioned that you have been experiencing work-related stress and have been staying up late. Stress is a well-known factor that can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to irregularities in your menstrual cycle. Lack of sleep can also affect your overall health and hormonal regulation. It's essential to find ways to manage stress, whether through relaxation techniques, exercise, or talking to someone about your concerns.
3. Hormonal Imbalance: Prolonged menstruation can sometimes be a sign of hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid issues. If your periods continue to be irregular or prolonged, it might be a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional who can evaluate your hormonal levels and overall reproductive health.
4. Other Medical Conditions: In some cases, prolonged menstruation can be associated with underlying medical conditions such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or other gynecological issues. If you experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or unusual discharge, it would be wise to seek medical attention.
5. When to Seek Help: Since your current episode of menstruation has lasted longer than usual, and you're feeling concerned, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to rule out any significant issues.
In summary, while it’s possible that your recent dietary choices and lifestyle factors may have played a role in your prolonged menstruation, it’s essential to consider the broader context of your health. Monitoring your symptoms, managing stress, and seeking medical advice if the situation persists will help ensure that you maintain good reproductive health. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health. Take care!
