Varicocele issues

Hello, doctor! I have moderate varicocele on the left side, and currently, there is none on the right side.
I would like to ask if there is a possibility of developing varicocele on the right side at my age?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/10/17

Dr. Sun Hongshun reply Urology

Hello: Left-sided varicocele occurs because the venous return is directed to the left renal vein, where the pressure is higher.
Therefore, about 90% of varicoceles occur on the left side, just like yours.
In contrast, the right-sided venous return goes to the inferior vena cava, making the likelihood of developing a varicocele in that area lower, so please do not worry excessively.
If you still have questions or symptoms, please consult a urologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Varicocele, which is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum, is more commonly found on the left side due to anatomical differences in the venous drainage of the testicles. However, it is indeed possible for a varicocele to develop on the right side later in life, even if you currently do not have any signs of it.
The development of varicocele can be influenced by several factors, including age, hormonal changes, and increased pressure in the abdominal cavity. As men age, the risk of developing varicocele can increase due to changes in the venous system and the potential for valve incompetence in the veins. This means that even if you currently have a moderate varicocele on the left side, it does not preclude the possibility of developing a varicocele on the right side in the future.

In addition, certain lifestyle factors can contribute to the development of varicocele. For instance, prolonged standing, heavy lifting, or straining during bowel movements can increase intra-abdominal pressure, which may lead to the formation of varicoceles. If you have a family history of varicocele or other venous disorders, your risk may also be higher.

If you are concerned about the potential for developing a right-sided varicocele, it is advisable to monitor any changes in your body and consult with a healthcare professional. Regular check-ups can help in early detection and management of any issues that may arise.
In terms of treatment, if a varicocele does develop and causes symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or fertility issues, there are several options available. These include conservative management, such as wearing supportive underwear, or surgical interventions like varicocelectomy, which involves the removal of the affected veins.

Furthermore, it is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding excessive weight gain, as these factors can help reduce the risk of developing varicocele and other venous issues.

In summary, while the left-sided varicocele is more common, it is possible for a right-sided varicocele to develop later in life. Regular monitoring and consultation with a healthcare provider can help manage any potential risks and ensure appropriate treatment if necessary.
