Recommended medications for candidiasis infection?

Hello, doctor.
Recently, I've been experiencing intense itching at the vaginal opening.
I previously sought medical attention in Taiwan and was diagnosed with a yeast infection.
After reading some articles online, I believe my current symptoms may indicate a Candida infection (burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, severe itching, white flakes resembling tissue paper, vaginal redness and swelling, discharge, etc.).
The severity of the itching is significantly affecting my daily routine.
However, I am currently abroad and will not return to Taiwan until early next year, at which point I will definitely seek medical attention for a re-evaluation.
In the meantime, what should I ask the pharmacist for in terms of names or brands of creams or suppositories (in English) at a foreign pharmacy? (I have previously used suppositories.) Additionally, aside from adjusting my routine to boost my immune system, are there any immediate remedies for itching? I am really uncomfortable.
Thank you for your response.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the treatment for vaginal candidiasis primarily involves the use of suppositories and topical creams.
If there is no improvement with continued treatment, it is advisable to consult a physician for further examinations, such as microscopic examination of secretions or culture tests.
For patients with drug resistance or recurrent infections, oral medications may also be used.
It is recommended to temporarily abstain from sexual intercourse during the treatment period.

Please note that the medications prescribed in hospitals are prescription drugs, and without a physician's diagnosis and prescription, they cannot be sold at general pharmacies.
According to domestic medical regulations, a physician must personally examine a patient before providing treatment, prescribing medications, or issuing a diagnosis.

When dealing with a suspected Candida infection, commonly referred to as a yeast infection, it is essential to understand the appropriate medications and treatments available. Based on your symptoms, which include intense itching, burning during urination, frequent urination, and abnormal discharge, it does sound like you may be experiencing a Candida infection.
In the United States, the first-line treatment for uncomplicated vulvovaginal candidiasis typically includes antifungal medications such as Fluconazole (commonly known by its brand name, Diflucan). This medication is often prescribed as a single oral dose of 150 mg, which is effective for many women. Over-the-counter options include antifungal creams or vaginal suppositories, such as miconazole (Monistat) or clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin), which can be used for localized treatment.

When you visit a pharmacy abroad, you can ask the pharmacist for these specific medications by name. For example, you can say, "I'm looking for an antifungal treatment for a yeast infection. Do you have Fluconazole, Miconazole, or Clotrimazole?" These medications are widely available and should be recognizable to pharmacists in many countries.

In addition to medication, there are several immediate measures you can take to alleviate itching and discomfort:
1. Cool Compresses: Applying a cool, damp cloth to the affected area can provide temporary relief from itching and irritation.

2. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from scented soaps, bubble baths, and feminine hygiene sprays, as these can exacerbate irritation.

3. Loose Clothing: Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and clothing to allow the area to breathe and reduce moisture buildup.

4. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush out your system, which can be beneficial if you're experiencing burning during urination.

5. Probiotics: Consider incorporating probiotics into your diet, as they can help restore the natural flora of the vagina and may prevent future infections.

6. Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting, try to avoid scratching the area, as this can lead to further irritation or even secondary infections.

While these measures can help manage symptoms temporarily, it is crucial to seek medical attention as soon as you return to Taiwan for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Persistent or recurrent yeast infections may require a more comprehensive evaluation to rule out underlying conditions, such as diabetes or immune system issues.

In summary, for immediate relief and treatment of a suspected Candida infection, look for over-the-counter antifungal medications like Fluconazole, Miconazole, or Clotrimazole at the pharmacy. Additionally, employing self-care strategies can help alleviate discomfort while you await further medical evaluation. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
