Laser surgery issues?

Hello, I currently have issues with nasal allergies, a slightly deviated septum, and nasal turbinate hypertrophy (though I'm not sure if it's the inferior turbinate or nasal polyps).
I experience some nasal congestion, but I can still breathe, although it feels like the airflow is somewhat reduced.
Recently, I saw a clinic in Taipei that mentioned a radiofrequency ablation procedure that can cure nasal allergies (http://nose123.com.tw/page-list.php?no=15).
I left a message, but they haven't responded, and I couldn't find related information online, so I would like to ask here if such a surgery really exists.
If it does, is the procedure for excising the nasal wing nerve the same as the ablation of the nasal wing canal nerve? Is the surgery covered by health insurance? What is the recovery time after the procedure?
Additionally, I want to ask about the carbon dioxide laser surgery.
A doctor at a hospital recommended this procedure to me, and after I underwent it (around October or November last year), I didn't notice much change in the first two to three months, and I still experienced severe allergy symptoms.
However, I am unsure if it was due to a simple cold or allergies.
Since the beginning of this year, I have had fewer allergy episodes and no severe symptoms (I wonder if it's because of the warmer weather this year?).
Recently, I have started to experience some symptoms again, and I am considering whether to undergo the procedure again.
So, I would like to ask if it is normal for someone in my situation to see results after two to three months? Thank you.

Hello, the effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation for treating nasal allergies may vary and is not the same as direct excision of the nasal wing nerves.
This procedure is likely not covered by health insurance, and for further details, please discuss with the surgeon.
As for carbon dioxide laser surgery, it primarily aims to alleviate nasal congestion.
If you continue to experience sneezing and runny nose after the surgery, it is recommended to maintain long-term medication or nasal spray for control.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding the complexities of allergic rhinitis and nasal issues can be quite challenging, especially when considering surgical options like laser surgery. Your symptoms, including nasal congestion, potential nasal septum deviation, and enlarged nasal turbinates, are common in individuals suffering from allergic rhinitis.
Firstly, let's clarify the surgical options available for treating allergic rhinitis and related nasal issues. The procedure you mentioned, radiofrequency ablation (often referred to as RF ablation), is indeed a minimally invasive technique used to reduce the size of the nasal turbinates. This can help alleviate nasal obstruction and improve airflow. The procedure works by using radiofrequency energy to shrink the tissue of the turbinates, which can be beneficial for patients with chronic nasal congestion due to turbinate hypertrophy.
On the other hand, the term "cutting the nasal wing nerve" typically refers to a different procedure aimed at reducing nasal sensitivity and, consequently, allergic reactions. This is often done through a technique called "sphenopalatine ganglion block," which targets the nerves responsible for nasal sensations. While both procedures aim to alleviate symptoms of nasal obstruction and allergic rhinitis, they target different anatomical structures and mechanisms.

Regarding insurance coverage, whether these procedures are covered by health insurance can vary significantly based on your specific plan and the medical necessity of the procedure as determined by your healthcare provider. It is advisable to consult with your insurance provider and discuss with your ENT specialist to understand the coverage options available to you.

As for recovery time, it can vary depending on the specific procedure performed. Generally, patients can expect some swelling and discomfort for a few days post-procedure, but many return to normal activities within a week. However, full recovery and the realization of the benefits of the surgery may take several weeks to months, as the tissues heal and inflammation subsides.

Regarding your experience with carbon dioxide (CO2) laser surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience delayed improvement in symptoms. The initial period post-surgery may still involve some allergic reactions or symptoms due to environmental factors or other underlying conditions. The fact that you noticed a reduction in symptoms over time suggests that the surgery may have had a positive effect, but it is also essential to consider that allergic rhinitis can be influenced by various factors, including seasonal changes, allergens, and overall health.

If you are experiencing a resurgence of symptoms, it may be worthwhile to consult with your ENT specialist to evaluate your current condition. They may recommend further diagnostic tests, such as allergy testing or imaging studies, to assess any changes in your nasal anatomy or identify new allergens that may be contributing to your symptoms.

In summary, both RF ablation and CO2 laser surgery can be effective treatments for allergic rhinitis and nasal obstruction, but they serve different purposes and have different recovery timelines. It is crucial to have an open dialogue with your healthcare provider about your symptoms, treatment options, and any concerns you may have regarding the procedures. This will ensure that you receive the most appropriate care tailored to your specific needs.
