Throat perforation issue?
Hello Doctor: Recently, I have noticed two large ulcers on the left side of my throat, near the tongue.
However, one of the large ulcers has a white, raised area around it.
I would like to ask if that white area is part of the ulcer, or should I see an otolaryngologist for further examination? Thank you, Doctor.

Hello, regarding your inquiry, it is still recommended to consult an otolaryngologist or a dentist for an in-person evaluation.

When it comes to throat ulcers, particularly those that manifest as large sores or lesions in the throat area, it is essential to understand the underlying causes and when to seek specialized medical attention. Based on your description, you have noticed two significant ulcers on the left side of your throat near the tongue, with one of them exhibiting a white, protruding area around it.
Throat ulcers can arise from various conditions, including viral infections (such as herpes simplex), bacterial infections (like streptococcal pharyngitis), irritations from allergies, or even systemic conditions such as Behçet's disease or autoimmune disorders. The presence of a white area surrounding the ulcer could indicate a few possibilities. It might be a sign of necrotic tissue, which can occur in severe infections, or it could be a manifestation of a fungal infection, such as oral thrush, especially if you have been on antibiotics recently.
Given the complexity of throat conditions, it is advisable to consult with an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. An ENT specialist can perform a thorough examination, which may include a visual inspection of the throat, a possible biopsy of the ulcer if deemed necessary, and other diagnostic tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. They can also provide appropriate treatment options based on the diagnosis, which may range from topical medications to systemic treatments, depending on the underlying cause.
In summary, the white protruding area you see could be related to the ulcer itself, but it is crucial to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional. If you experience additional symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, persistent pain, fever, or if the ulcers do not improve within a few days, seeking medical attention promptly is essential. Early intervention can prevent complications and lead to a more effective treatment plan.
