Post-abortion issues

Hello Doctor: I underwent a suction curettage abortion on October 29, and I currently have no bleeding.
However, my Pap smear results indicate inflammation.
Since the surgery until today, November 8, I have been taking my medications on time, attending follow-up appointments, maintaining a light diet, and have not engaged in sexual activity.
On the day I received the report, the doctor prescribed me suppositories and oral medication, and advised me to continue drinking herbal soup.
Is it normal to have inflammation detected in the post-operative Pap smear? Can I stop drinking the herbal soup? Additionally, I have a social event this weekend where I will need to drink alcohol.
Is it okay for me to drink? I usually do not consume alcohol.
Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. Huang Yiwen reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello Ms.
FREEZ: The results of your Pap smear indicate cervical inflammation, which is quite common in clinical practice.
If you do not have any symptoms, there is no need to worry, and it is unrelated to your surgery.
It is not necessary to stop using the herbal formula.
Moderate alcohol consumption will not have any impact.

More Info

After undergoing a surgical abortion, it is not uncommon to experience some complications, including inflammation, which can be detected through a Pap smear. In your case, it appears that you have been diligent in following your doctor's advice regarding medication and follow-up appointments, which is crucial for a smooth recovery.

To address your concerns, it is important to understand that inflammation after an abortion can occur due to various reasons, including the body's natural healing response, potential infections, or retained products of conception. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience increased pain, fever, or unusual discharge, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Regarding the use of the herbal remedy "生化湯" (Shenghua Decoction), it is traditionally used in Chinese medicine to help with recovery after childbirth or abortion by promoting blood circulation and reducing inflammation. However, whether you should continue taking it depends on your specific situation and your doctor's recommendations. If your doctor has advised you to take it, it is best to continue until they suggest otherwise. If you feel uncertain about its necessity or if you experience any side effects, do not hesitate to discuss this with your healthcare provider.

As for consuming alcohol, it is generally advisable to avoid alcohol after any surgical procedure, including an abortion. Alcohol can interfere with your body’s healing process and may interact with any medications you are taking, including those prescribed for inflammation. Since you mentioned that you do not usually drink, it might be best to skip the alcohol during this recovery period to ensure your body can heal properly without any additional stressors.

In summary, while some inflammation post-abortion can be normal, it is crucial to stay vigilant about your symptoms and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. Continue taking your prescribed medications, and consult your doctor before making any changes to your treatment plan, including stopping herbal remedies or consuming alcohol. Your health and recovery should be your top priority, and your doctor is the best resource for personalized advice based on your specific condition.
