Chalazion surgery completed?

Hello doctor, this is my second time developing a chalazion and I have just undergone surgery for the second time.
This time it is located on my lower eyelid, and it is quite large; I can even feel a hard lump in the eye bag area.
The doctor mentioned that this is fibrosis.
After the surgery today, the eyelid has noticeably reduced in swelling, but the eye bag still has a hard lump.
Is this normal?

Dr. Liang Ce reply Ophthalmology

Fibrosis refers to the formation of a hard shell around the chalazion.
Surgery only cleans out the inside, and the hard shell will take some time to gradually absorb, which may take several weeks or even months to disappear.
Please be patient, and thank you for your inquiry.

After undergoing surgery for a chalazion, it is common to have questions about the recovery process and what to expect in terms of healing. A chalazion is a blocked oil gland in the eyelid that can lead to swelling and discomfort. Surgical intervention is often necessary when a chalazion is particularly large or persistent, as in your case.

Post-surgery, it is normal to experience some swelling and tenderness around the surgical site. The fact that you noticed a reduction in swelling of the eyelid is a positive sign, indicating that the surgery was effective in addressing the chalazion. However, the presence of a hard lump in the area of the eye bag, which you described as fibrosis, can be concerning. Fibrosis is the thickening and scarring of connective tissue, which can occur as part of the healing process. It is not uncommon for some firmness to remain after the removal of a chalazion, especially if the chalazion was large or if there was significant inflammation prior to surgery.

In the immediate post-operative period, you should expect some degree of bruising and swelling, which can last for several days to weeks. The eyelid may also feel tight or uncomfortable as it heals. It is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, which may include applying warm compresses to the area to promote drainage and reduce swelling, as well as avoiding any activities that could strain the eye, such as heavy lifting or vigorous exercise.

As for the hard lump you are feeling, it is important to monitor it closely. In many cases, the firmness will gradually diminish as the healing process continues. However, if the lump persists for an extended period or if you experience increased pain, redness, or any discharge, you should contact your ophthalmologist for further evaluation. They may recommend additional treatments, such as corticosteroid injections, to help reduce inflammation and promote healing.

In summary, while some firmness in the area of the eye bag can be a normal part of the healing process after chalazion surgery, it is crucial to keep an eye on any changes. Regular follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider will help ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected. If you have any concerns or if the lump does not improve over time, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for advice. Your health and comfort are the top priorities during your recovery.
