The development timeline of the penis?

I would like to ask the doctor, at what age does male development typically continue until? I am currently 19 years old, and my penis started developing at age 14.
It is now approximately 11 cm in length when flaccid and about 19.7 cm when erect.
Is it possible for it to grow any further? I hope it doesn't grow anymore.
What factors could contribute to this? My father's size is not as large, but isn't penis size mostly determined by genetics? Thank you.

Xiao Chen, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/13

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: It is difficult to predict whether further development will occur, but adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and moderate exercise are essential for physical development.
Your situation may need to be left to fate.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Understanding penis development is an important aspect of male puberty and growth. Generally, male genital development begins during puberty, which typically starts between the ages of 9 and 14. The growth of the penis and testicles occurs in stages, with most boys experiencing significant changes during their teenage years. By the age of 19, many males have reached their full adult size, but there can still be some variation.

In terms of growth timelines, the penis usually reaches its maximum size by the late teenage years, around 18 to 19 years old. However, it is important to note that individual growth patterns can vary significantly due to a variety of factors, including genetics, hormonal levels, and overall health. The average size of an erect penis is often cited to be between 12 to 16 centimeters (approximately 4.7 to 6.3 inches), with a non-erect size averaging around 9 to 10 centimeters (approximately 3.5 to 4 inches). Your measurements of 11 cm when flaccid and 19.7 cm when erect are within the normal range, and it is not uncommon for individuals to have concerns about their size, especially in comparison to peers or family members.

Genetics plays a crucial role in determining penis size, as it does with many physical characteristics. If your father has a smaller size, it is possible that you may not have inherited the same traits. However, it is also essential to recognize that penis size does not determine one's worth or masculinity. Psychological factors, such as self-esteem and body image, can be influenced by societal standards, but it is vital to focus on health rather than size.

As for whether your penis will continue to grow, it is unlikely that significant growth will occur after the age of 19. Most males will have completed their growth by this age, although some may experience minor changes due to weight fluctuations or hormonal changes. If you are concerned about your development or have questions about your health, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and reassurance.

In addition to genetics, other factors can influence penis development and size. Hormonal levels, particularly testosterone, play a significant role during puberty. Conditions that affect hormone levels, such as hypogonadism, can lead to delayed development or smaller size. Nutrition and overall health during the growth years can also impact development; a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports healthy growth.

In summary, at 19 years old, you are likely nearing the end of your penis growth phase. Your current size is within the normal range, and while genetics plays a significant role, it is essential to focus on health and well-being rather than comparisons. If you have further concerns or questions about your development, consider speaking with a healthcare provider who can offer guidance tailored to your individual situation.
