Wisdom tooth extraction site?
Doctor, it's been a week since my wisdom tooth extraction, and I've had my stitches removed.
However, I accidentally caused some bleeding while cleaning the wound with a syringe.
What could happen? Is it normal to feel pain in the tooth in front of the extracted wisdom tooth? If that tooth has a cavity, when would you recommend getting it filled?

Dear Mr.
LOLO,
Hello! It is best not to use a syringe for rinsing! If you are experiencing pain in your front teeth, you should consider the possibility of cavities or periodontal disease.
Cavities should be treated promptly, and if pain persists after treatment, a root canal may be necessary.
Please communicate more with your dentist! Thank you! Wishing you good health!
Sincerely,
Dr.

After wisdom tooth extraction, it is crucial to follow proper post-operative care to ensure a smooth recovery and minimize complications. Given your situation, where you have experienced bleeding after rinsing the extraction site with a syringe, it is important to understand the implications and how to manage your recovery effectively.
Firstly, it is not uncommon to experience some bleeding after a week post-extraction, especially if you have disturbed the clot that has formed in the socket. The blood clot is essential for healing, and any disruption can lead to a condition known as dry socket (alveolar osteitis), which can be quite painful and prolong recovery. If you notice persistent bleeding or if the bleeding is significant, it is advisable to contact your dentist or oral surgeon for guidance. They may recommend biting down on a clean gauze pad for 30 minutes to help control the bleeding. If the bleeding does not subside, further evaluation may be necessary.
Regarding the pain you are experiencing in the tooth adjacent to the extraction site, some discomfort can be expected as your mouth heals. However, if the pain is severe or worsening, it could indicate an infection or other complications. It is essential to monitor the pain and consult your dentist if it does not improve or if you notice other symptoms such as swelling, fever, or pus.
As for the tooth in front of the extracted wisdom tooth that has decay, it is advisable to address this issue as soon as possible. Dental decay can lead to further complications, including infection or abscess formation, especially if the tooth is already sensitive or painful. Generally, it is best to wait until the extraction site has healed sufficiently before undergoing any dental procedures on adjacent teeth. This healing period can vary, but typically, it is recommended to wait at least a couple of weeks after the extraction before scheduling a filling. However, if the tooth is causing significant discomfort or if there is visible decay, you should not delay seeking treatment. Your dentist can assess the situation and determine the best course of action.
In summary, after wisdom tooth extraction, it is vital to monitor your healing process closely. If you experience bleeding, pain, or any unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your dental care provider. They can provide you with personalized advice and treatment options to ensure your recovery is as smooth as possible. Additionally, addressing any dental issues with adjacent teeth promptly can help prevent further complications and maintain your overall oral health.
