Strong-smelling urine in children?
Hello, doctor.
My child is currently two and a half years old.
Recently, the smell of her urine has been particularly strong, which is unusual for her.
She has not had any urinary tract infections, and the color of her urine is normal.
There are no secretions or signs of redness or swelling.
However, the urine has a notably strong odor, and it smells somewhat foul when I get close to her private area.
She has been drinking plenty of water.
Should we conduct further tests, or could this be related to her diet? I have been giving her garlic chicken soup more frequently lately, and I'm wondering if the garlic could be a factor.
Thank you.

If you consume a lot of garlic, the odor in your urine may become stronger.
You might consider stopping its intake and then observe if the smell of your urine improves.
However, I also recommend doing a simple urinalysis to check for any abnormalities, such as infection, hematuria, proteinuria, or glycosuria, as these can be detected through basic urine tests.

When it comes to the strong odor of urine in toddlers, there are several factors to consider. It's important to note that changes in urine odor can be influenced by dietary habits, hydration levels, and potential underlying medical conditions. In your case, since your child is two and a half years old and has recently experienced a noticeable change in urine smell without any accompanying symptoms such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), redness, swelling, or unusual discharge, we can explore a few possible explanations.
1. Dietary Influences: One of the most common reasons for changes in urine odor is diet. Foods such as asparagus, garlic, and certain spices can impart a strong smell to urine. You mentioned that your child has been consuming garlic chicken soup more frequently. Garlic is known to cause a distinct odor in urine due to the breakdown of sulfur-containing compounds. If this is the primary change in your child's diet, it could very well be the reason for the strong urine smell.
2. Hydration Status: Adequate hydration is crucial for maintaining normal urine concentration and odor. If your child is not drinking enough fluids, the urine can become more concentrated, leading to a stronger smell. You mentioned that your child is drinking plenty of water, which is good. However, it's always worth monitoring their overall fluid intake to ensure they are adequately hydrated.
3. Medical Conditions: While you indicated that there are no signs of a urinary tract infection, it’s still important to consider other medical conditions that could cause changes in urine odor. For instance, conditions such as diabetes can lead to sweet-smelling urine, while certain metabolic disorders can cause unusual odors. However, these conditions are often accompanied by other symptoms, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, or changes in appetite.
4. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Although you mentioned that there have been no signs of a UTI, it is worth noting that UTIs can sometimes present with a strong odor without other obvious symptoms, especially in young children. If the odor persists or is accompanied by any new symptoms, such as fever, irritability, or changes in urination patterns, it would be prudent to consult a pediatrician for further evaluation.
5. When to Seek Further Evaluation: If the strong odor continues despite dietary adjustments and ensuring adequate hydration, or if you notice any other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to consult your pediatrician. They may recommend a urinalysis to rule out any underlying issues or infections.
In summary, the strong smell of your toddler's urine could likely be attributed to dietary changes, particularly the increased consumption of garlic. However, if the odor persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, seeking medical advice would be a wise course of action. Monitoring your child's overall health and any changes in their symptoms will help you determine if further investigation is necessary.
