Itching in the groin area with a hard lump present?
I want to ask the doctor! Recently, I've been experiencing itching in my groin area! When I scratch, I notice there are hard lumps the size of mung beans! There are many, not just one! They don't hurt when I touch or press on them, only itch! Taking a hot shower makes it itch even more! I previously saw a dermatologist who only prescribed me an ointment, but it hasn't improved! It's still very itchy! What could be the problem?

Hello: If you are not feeling well, you should seek medical attention again.
Generally, you should maintain dryness, wear loose-fitting pants, avoid overly spicy foods, limit alcohol consumption, use a mild soap during washing, and make sure to dry off thoroughly afterward.
These measures may help improve your symptoms.

More Info
Itchy groin and the presence of hard bumps can be concerning symptoms that warrant further investigation. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for your symptoms, and understanding these can help guide you toward appropriate treatment.
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacterial or fungal infections. It can lead to small, itchy bumps that may feel hard to the touch. Folliculitis can occur in areas where hair is present, including the groin. If the bumps are red and inflamed, this could be a likely cause.
2. Lymphadenopathy: The hard bumps you are feeling could be swollen lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to infections, inflammation, or other underlying conditions. In the groin area, this can occur in response to infections in the lower extremities or pelvic region.
3. Sebaceous Cysts: These are non-cancerous lumps beneath the skin that can occur in the groin area. They are usually painless but can become itchy or inflamed. If they become infected, they may present with redness, swelling, and tenderness.
4. Dermatitis: Conditions such as contact dermatitis can cause itchy skin and the formation of bumps. This could be due to an allergic reaction to soaps, detergents, or other irritants. If you have recently changed any products you use in that area, this could be a contributing factor.
5. Fungal Infections: Conditions like tinea cruris (jock itch) can cause itching and may lead to the formation of bumps. This is a common fungal infection in the groin area, especially in warm, moist environments.
6. Molluscum Contagiosum: This is a viral infection that can cause small, firm bumps on the skin. They are usually painless but can be itchy. This condition is more common in children but can affect adults as well.
Given that you have already seen a dermatologist and were prescribed a topical ointment without improvement, it may be time to consider a few additional steps:
- Follow-Up Consultation: Return to your dermatologist or seek a second opinion. It may be necessary to perform a skin scraping or biopsy to determine the exact nature of the bumps and the cause of the itching.
- Consider Allergy Testing: If dermatitis is suspected, allergy testing may help identify any irritants or allergens that could be causing your symptoms.
- Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Avoid tight clothing that can trap moisture and heat, which may exacerbate the itching.
- Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, your doctor may recommend different topical treatments, such as antifungal creams, corticosteroids for inflammation, or antibacterial ointments if an infection is suspected.
- Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch the itchy areas, this can lead to further irritation or infection. Consider using cool compresses to soothe the itching.
In summary, the hard bumps and itching in your groin area could be due to a variety of causes, including infections, cysts, or dermatitis. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. It’s important to address these symptoms promptly to prevent any potential complications.
