Is a delayed menstruation caused by psychological stress?
My last menstrual period started on October 18 and ended on October 25, but my cycles are not very regular, and I have been experiencing more blood clots.
I had unprotected intercourse on November 13, but there was no ejaculation.
My next expected period was on November 19, but it has not arrived yet.
I have been feeling a dull pain in my lower abdomen, but I do not have breast tenderness, and my discharge has been less than usual.
Occasionally, I feel dizzy and nauseous, my appetite is not great, and I do not feel particularly fatigued.
I am wondering if I might be pregnant or if it could just be psychological factors.
I have been staying up late more often in November and experiencing increased stress.
I am currently taking traditional Chinese medicine to help regulate my condition.
Could this be caused by psychological stress?

Hello: Menstruation can be easily affected by factors such as emotional stress, changes in routine, irregular diet, and abnormal weight gain or loss, which can lead to delays.
It is recommended that you first take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
If the result is negative, you can wait a few more days to see if your period arrives.
If it has not come after a week, you may consider trying to induce menstruation.

Stress can indeed be a significant factor affecting your menstrual cycle, including the timing and regularity of your periods. The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, and stress can disrupt this balance. When you experience stress, your body produces higher levels of cortisol, a hormone that can interfere with the production of reproductive hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This disruption can lead to irregular periods, missed periods, or changes in menstrual flow, including the presence of blood clots.
In your case, you mentioned that your last period was from October 18 to October 25, and you expected your next period around November 19, but it has not arrived yet. You also noted experiencing symptoms such as lower abdominal discomfort, occasional dizziness, nausea, and decreased appetite. These symptoms can be associated with both stress and potential pregnancy. Since you had unprotected intercourse on November 13, it is essential to consider the possibility of pregnancy, especially if your period does not arrive soon.
If you are concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, taking a home pregnancy test can provide clarity. These tests are generally reliable if taken after a missed period. If the test is negative and your period still does not come, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and any underlying issues.
Additionally, you mentioned that you have been experiencing increased stress and have been staying up late, which can further exacerbate hormonal imbalances. Stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can be beneficial in regulating your menstrual cycle. It’s also important to maintain a balanced diet and stay hydrated, as these factors can influence your overall health and hormonal balance.
If you are currently taking traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to help regulate your cycle, it may be helpful to discuss your symptoms and stress levels with your practitioner. TCM can offer various approaches to help manage stress and support menstrual health.
In summary, stress can indeed be a contributing factor to your late period, but it is crucial to rule out pregnancy and other potential medical issues. If your period does not arrive soon or if your symptoms worsen, seeking medical advice is recommended to ensure that you receive appropriate care and support.
