Skin issues

Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing diarrhea for a week (once a day), but I do not have abdominal pain.
I have also had itchy skin for the past week, and scratching it results in small, red, swollen patches that feel somewhat rough.
There is a red, swollen, peeling area on the skin under my eyes, but it has been gradually improving recently.
Could this possibly be a type of dermatitis? (I have a mild allergic constitution.) A few days ago, when the air pollution was severe, I even experienced difficulty breathing and became short of breath after climbing just a few stairs.
Today, I inexplicably felt tingling in my scalp and back about 5 or 6 times (the tingling was brief).
What could these symptoms indicate? Should I seek medical attention? Thank you.

Ting Yi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/21

More Info

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your skin issues and gastrointestinal symptoms. Based on the information you've provided, it seems you are experiencing a combination of skin itching, rash, and gastrointestinal disturbances, which can be quite distressing. Let's break down your symptoms and explore possible causes and recommendations.

Possible Causes of Your Symptoms
1. Skin Itching and Rash: The red, itchy patches on your skin, especially those that become rough when scratched, could indicate several conditions. Given your history of mild allergies, it is possible that you are experiencing an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis. This can occur when your skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen, leading to inflammation and itching. Conditions like eczema or psoriasis could also present similarly, characterized by red, itchy, and sometimes flaky skin.

2. Gastrointestinal Symptoms: The diarrhea lasting for a week without abdominal pain could be due to various factors, including a viral infection, food intolerance, or even stress. Since you mentioned that you have experienced respiratory difficulties in polluted conditions, it’s essential to consider that environmental factors might also be contributing to your symptoms.

3. Systemic Reactions: The combination of skin and gastrointestinal symptoms, along with the recent episodes of tingling in your scalp and back, could suggest a systemic allergic reaction or even a condition like urticaria (hives), which can be triggered by allergens or irritants.
4. Environmental Factors: Given that you mentioned experiencing respiratory difficulties in polluted conditions, it’s important to consider that air quality can significantly affect skin health. Pollutants can lead to skin irritation and exacerbate pre-existing conditions, especially in individuals with sensitive skin or allergies.

Recommendations
1. Consult a Dermatologist: Given the persistence of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. They can perform a thorough examination and possibly conduct patch testing to identify any allergens that may be causing your skin reactions.

2. Monitor Your Diet: Keep a food diary to track any potential food intolerances or allergies that may be contributing to your gastrointestinal symptoms. If you notice a correlation between certain foods and your symptoms, it may be helpful to eliminate those foods from your diet and discuss them with your healthcare provider.

3. Hydration and Skin Care: Ensure you are staying hydrated, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea. For your skin, consider using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to help alleviate dryness and irritation. Avoid harsh soaps or products that could further irritate your skin.

4. Manage Allergens: If you suspect that environmental factors are contributing to your symptoms, try to minimize exposure to known allergens. This could include staying indoors on days with poor air quality and using air purifiers.

5. Seek Immediate Care for Severe Symptoms: If you experience worsening symptoms, such as severe difficulty breathing, swelling, or extensive skin reactions, seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more serious allergic reaction.

Conclusion
Your symptoms warrant a comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. It’s essential to address both your skin and gastrointestinal symptoms holistically, as they may be interconnected. Please prioritize seeking medical advice to ensure you receive the care you need.

Take care, and I hope you find relief soon.
