Consultation on the Use of Bulk-Forming Laxatives


Hello, doctor! I am a 26-year-old patient from mainland China suffering from constipation for 9 years.
Recently, my bowel movements have improved significantly after taking Konsyl.
I have two questions:
1.
Can Konsyl be taken long-term?
2.
I have heard some doctors in mainland China say that long-term use of bulk-forming laxatives can lead to tolerance, reducing their effectiveness over time.
They suggest alternating between different bulk-forming laxatives, such as taking Konsyl for a few months, then switching to wheat fiber (Fiberform) for a few months, and then back to Konsyl, and so on.
Is this necessary? I am quite confused.

Hello: Konsyl is a pure natural fiber supplement made from the highly refined husks of psyllium seeds, used as a stool softener.
It is not absorbed by the body and primarily works by increasing the bulk of stool, so it should be taken with adequate water to achieve better stool-softening effects.
It is reasonable to alternate between different medications rather than using the same one consistently.
