Unexplained ear pain and eyelid swelling?

Hello Doctor, I have recently noticed that my left eyelid has been swollen and slightly painful upon waking for the past two days (the right eye is normal).
Additionally, I have been experiencing intermittent pain near the base of my left ear, at the back of my left skull, and slight pain in my lower left abdomen.
What could be the possible causes of these symptoms, and which specialty should I consult for this issue? Thank you!

Ting, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/23

Dear Sender,
You have issues with eyelid swelling and intermittent pain at the base of your skull near the ear; these may not be significantly related to the mild pain in your lower left abdomen.
For the former, you should consult an otolaryngologist to rule out conditions such as mastoiditis, sinusitis, migraine, or trigeminal neuralgia.
For the latter, it would be advisable to see a gastroenterologist or a gynecologist (if there are any abnormal discharges) among other specialists.
Wishing you health and safety.

Hello! Thank you for your inquiry regarding your recent symptoms of left eyelid swelling, ear pain, and discomfort in the left lower abdomen. It’s understandable to feel concerned when experiencing such symptoms, especially when they appear suddenly and without a clear explanation.

The combination of eyelid swelling and ear pain can be indicative of several potential underlying issues. One possibility is an allergic reaction, which can cause localized swelling in the eyelid and may also lead to discomfort in the ear if there is associated inflammation. Allergies can be triggered by various factors, including environmental allergens, food, or even medications.
Another potential cause could be an infection. Conditions such as conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye) or blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid) can lead to swelling and discomfort in the eyelid. If the infection spreads or is associated with sinus issues, it could also affect the ear, leading to pain or discomfort. Additionally, an ear infection (otitis media) could cause referred pain to the area around the eye, especially if there is swelling or inflammation in the surrounding tissues.

The pain in your left lower abdomen could be unrelated or could indicate a more systemic issue. For instance, gastrointestinal issues such as appendicitis or diverticulitis could manifest as abdominal pain, but these would typically not be associated with eyelid or ear symptoms.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with a specialist who can provide a comprehensive evaluation. An Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist would be an appropriate first step, as they can assess the ear pain and any potential connections to sinus or eyelid issues. They may perform a physical examination, and if necessary, imaging studies such as a CT scan to evaluate the sinuses and ear structures.

If the ENT specialist rules out ear-related issues, you may then consider seeing an ophthalmologist for the eyelid swelling. They can examine the eye and eyelid for signs of infection, inflammation, or other ocular conditions.
In addition, if your abdominal pain persists or worsens, it may be prudent to consult a gastroenterologist to rule out any gastrointestinal conditions.
In summary, your symptoms could be due to a variety of causes, including allergies, infections, or other systemic issues. It is essential to seek medical attention promptly to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Please keep track of any additional symptoms you may experience, as this information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in making an accurate diagnosis. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you find relief from your symptoms soon!
