Moles on the genital organs?
Hello, Doctor.
I recently read an article that mentioned one should be cautious if there are moles found on the genital area.
I hadn't paid much attention to this before, but I just noticed that I have over a dozen moles on my penis and scrotum after using the restroom.
I'm quite anxious about it.
The moles have probably been there for a while, but I'm not sure when they appeared.
A year ago, I visited a urologist twice because one of my testicles was larger than the other.
At that time, two doctors performed a digital examination and found nothing unusual.
I didn't bring up the issue of the moles, and the doctors didn't mention anything either.
I'm not sure if they overlooked it or if it’s not a concern.
Should I seek another consultation?

Hello: It's important to pay attention to moles, especially if they change in color, increase in size, or become rough in texture.
However, most of the time, there is no cause for concern, so try not to alarm yourself.
Therefore, you should visit a doctor at the hospital for an examination, and then just keep an eye on any changes in your moles.
Thank you for your inquiry.

When it comes to moles or lesions on the genital area, it is understandable to feel concerned, especially given the potential implications for skin health. Moles, or nevi, can vary widely in appearance and significance, and while many are benign, some may warrant further evaluation.
Firstly, it’s important to understand the characteristics of moles that could indicate a need for medical attention. The ABCDE rule is a helpful guideline for assessing moles:
- Asymmetry: If one half of the mole does not match the other half.
- Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges.
- Color: A variety of colors (brown, black, tan, red, white, or blue) within the same mole.
- Diameter: Moles larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) should be evaluated.
- Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or elevation, or new symptoms such as bleeding, itching, or crusting.
In your case, since you have noticed multiple moles on your penis and scrotum, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist or a urologist who specializes in skin lesions. While the moles may have been present for a long time and were not flagged during your previous visits, it is always better to err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to changes in skin appearance in sensitive areas.
Additionally, the fact that you previously had concerns about the size of your testicles and sought medical advice indicates that you are proactive about your health, which is commendable. It’s possible that the doctors you consulted were focused on the testicular issue and may not have thoroughly examined the moles, or they may have deemed them benign at the time. However, since you are now aware of their presence and have concerns, it is essential to bring this up during your next medical visit.
In terms of what to expect during your appointment, the doctor will likely perform a physical examination of the moles. They may use a dermatoscope, a specialized tool that allows for a closer look at the skin, to assess the moles more accurately. If there is any suspicion of malignancy, they may recommend a biopsy, where a small sample of the mole is removed and sent for laboratory analysis.
It’s also worth noting that while skin cancer in the genital area is less common than in other parts of the body, it can still occur. Therefore, being vigilant about any changes in your skin is crucial. If you notice any new symptoms, such as pain, itching, or changes in the moles, do not hesitate to seek medical advice sooner rather than later.
In summary, given your concerns and the presence of multiple moles in the genital area, it is advisable to schedule a follow-up appointment with a healthcare provider. They can provide a thorough evaluation and peace of mind regarding your skin health. Remember, early detection and intervention are key in managing any potential skin issues effectively.
