Mole on the penis?

Today, I noticed several moles on my penis and scrotum while using the restroom.
The moles seem to have been there for quite some time, but I'm not sure when they appeared.
Doctor, is it abnormal for a man to have moles on his penis? If I need to see a doctor, should I go to a dermatologist or a urologist? Thank you.
I have had a habit of masturbation since middle school; could this be related?

Mr. Wang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/24

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

The location of moles is not important; each one should be evaluated individually.
It is not related to masturbation.

More Info

Moles on the penis and scrotum can be a common occurrence and are generally considered normal, especially if they have been present for a long time and have not changed in size, shape, or color. Moles, or nevi, are benign growths of skin cells that can appear anywhere on the body, including the genital area. However, it is essential to monitor any changes in these moles, as changes can sometimes indicate a need for further evaluation.

When assessing whether a mole is normal, consider the ABCDE criteria for moles, which stands for Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter larger than 6mm, and Evolving (changing in size, shape, or color). If any of these characteristics are present, it is advisable to seek a consultation with a dermatologist.

Regarding your question about whether to see a dermatologist or a urologist, it typically depends on the nature of your concerns. If the moles appear to be changing or if you have any other skin-related concerns, a dermatologist would be the appropriate specialist to consult. They specialize in skin conditions and can provide a thorough examination and diagnosis. On the other hand, if you have concerns related to urinary function or other issues specific to the urogenital system, a urologist would be the right choice.

As for your mention of a history of masturbation, it is important to clarify that masturbation does not cause moles or skin changes. Moles are primarily influenced by genetic factors and sun exposure. However, if you have any concerns about your sexual health or habits, discussing them with a healthcare provider can provide reassurance and guidance.

In conclusion, while moles on the penis and scrotum can be normal, it is crucial to monitor them for any changes. If you notice any irregularities or have concerns, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. A dermatologist can provide a comprehensive evaluation and determine if any further action is necessary. Regular self-examinations and awareness of your body can help you maintain your health and address any potential issues early on.
