Bleeding occurred before finishing the birth control pills?
Hello, doctor.
I have been taking Yaz for about 5 to 6 months, but there have been a few instances where I experienced some sporadic bleeding before finishing the pack.
These instances of bleeding occurred during the first 10 days of starting the medication, and I understand that spotting can be normal, so I continued taking the pills.
However, this time the bleeding is different; I noticed brown discharge when I had only 3 pills left in the pack.
Is this also a normal occurrence? Thank you, doctor.

Hello, starting the birth control pill on the fifth day of your menstrual cycle and experiencing light bleeding may indicate that the dosage is insufficient.
It is recommended to try a different type of birth control pill next time.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Spotting while taking birth control pills, such as the one you mentioned (悦己), can be a common occurrence, especially during the first few months of use. This phenomenon is often referred to as "breakthrough bleeding." It is important to understand that hormonal contraceptives work by altering the hormonal balance in your body to prevent ovulation and regulate your menstrual cycle.
When you first start taking birth control pills, your body may need time to adjust to the new hormone levels. During this adjustment period, it is not unusual to experience some irregular bleeding or spotting, particularly in the first three months. This can happen because the lining of the uterus is being stabilized, and the hormonal fluctuations can lead to unexpected bleeding.
In your case, since you have been taking the pill for about 5 to 6 months, the occurrence of spotting may still be within the realm of normal, especially if it is light and not accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as severe pain or heavy bleeding. The fact that you experienced this spotting after taking the pills for a significant period suggests that your body might still be adjusting, or it could be a response to other factors such as stress, illness, or changes in weight.
However, it is crucial to monitor the pattern of your bleeding. If the spotting becomes heavier, lasts longer than a few days, or is accompanied by other symptoms like severe abdominal pain, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They may want to rule out other potential causes of abnormal bleeding, such as hormonal imbalances, infections, or other medical conditions.
Regarding the coffee-colored discharge you mentioned, this is often old blood that is being expelled from the body. It can be a normal part of the menstrual cycle or hormonal changes. However, if this discharge is persistent or changes in character (e.g., becomes foul-smelling or is accompanied by itching or irritation), it would be wise to seek medical advice.
In summary, while spotting can be a normal side effect of taking birth control pills, especially in the initial months, it is essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your bleeding patterns. If you have concerns or if the spotting continues, please reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and to ensure that everything is functioning as it should be. They can provide reassurance and, if necessary, adjust your contraceptive method or investigate further.
