Menstrual issues

Hello Doctor: I had an abortion on October 13.
I had sexual intercourse on November 2, 5, 6, 12, and 16, using protection.
My menstrual cycle is irregular, and I sometimes experience sharp pain in my ovaries on either side.
I visited a doctor on November 17 and was told I am not pregnant.
I took medication to induce menstruation, but I don't feel any signs of my period coming.
Later, on November 21 and 23, I took home pregnancy tests, which also showed negative results.
Recently, I've noticed that my vaginal discharge has decreased and feels dry.
I would like to know if there is still a possibility of pregnancy or if this is related to menstrual irregularity.
Thank you, Doctor.

H, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/26

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances of getting pregnant are low, but it's best to take preventive measures at all times and not rely on the safe period.
Generally, after taking medication to induce menstruation, it may take 3-7 days for your period to arrive.
If your period does not come after more than a week, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing an abortion, many women experience menstrual irregularities, which can be concerning and confusing. In your case, it seems that you are dealing with a combination of factors, including a recent abortion, irregular menstrual cycles, and the possibility of pregnancy. Let’s break down your situation and address your concerns.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that after an abortion, it can take some time for your menstrual cycle to return to its normal rhythm. The hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and the subsequent abortion can lead to fluctuations in your menstrual cycle. It is not uncommon for women to experience irregular periods, delayed menstruation, or changes in menstrual flow after an abortion. This can be exacerbated by factors such as stress, changes in weight, and underlying health conditions.

You mentioned that you had sexual intercourse on several occasions after your abortion, and although you used protection, it is still possible to become pregnant if the condom fails. The fact that you have tested negative for pregnancy on multiple occasions (on November 21 and 23) suggests that you are likely not pregnant at this time. However, it’s important to note that pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, so if your cycle is irregular, it may be beneficial to wait a little longer before testing again.

The changes in your vaginal discharge, such as experiencing less discharge and a drier sensation, can also be related to hormonal fluctuations. After an abortion, your body is adjusting, and this can affect the consistency and amount of cervical mucus. If you are concerned about the changes in your discharge or if you experience any unusual symptoms (such as itching, burning, or a strong odor), it would be wise to consult with your healthcare provider to rule out any infections or other issues.

Regarding your menstrual cycle, since you have a history of irregular periods, it may take some time for your cycle to normalize. If you have taken medication to induce menstruation and have not experienced any bleeding, this could be a sign that your body is still adjusting. It may be helpful to keep track of your menstrual cycle, noting any symptoms you experience, as this information can be valuable for your healthcare provider.

If you continue to experience irregularities or if you have concerns about your menstrual health, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include blood tests to check hormone levels, an ultrasound to assess your reproductive organs, and other diagnostic tests as needed. This will help determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.

In summary, while it is possible to experience irregularities in your menstrual cycle after an abortion, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance and support as your body adjusts, and help you understand what to expect moving forward. If you have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for personalized advice. Your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking professional guidance is always a good step.
