Menstrual period is five days late?

I would like to ask the doctor, I am currently 5 days late for my period.
My menstrual cycle usually ranges from 32 to 37 days.
I have been controlling my diet to lose weight, and I have lost nearly 4 kilograms in a month.
For the past few days, I have been experiencing slight cramping sensations that usually occur before my period.
The last time my period started was on October 24, and a few days prior, I noticed a trend of weight gain of about 1 kilogram (which I believe is water retention).
However, today my weight has decreased, and I am wondering if my period is about to start.
I have had diarrhea twice, once the day before yesterday and once yesterday.
There has been almost no vaginal discharge; previously, I would notice light spotting on my underwear a day or two before my period.
I had sexual intercourse once last week, and we used a condom throughout.
I would like to ask: 1.
Is there a connection between weight loss and delayed menstruation? 2.
If my period is delayed, does acupressure have any effect? 3.
Is there a possibility of pregnancy?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances of pregnancy are low, so it's best to take preventive measures at all times and not rely on the safe period.
Weight loss is not necessarily related to menstruation.
If your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding menstrual irregularities can be complex, especially when factors such as weight loss, lifestyle changes, and potential pregnancy are involved. Based on your situation, let's address your questions systematically.

1. Does weight loss affect menstrual delay?
Yes, weight loss can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. When you lose weight, especially if it is rapid or significant (like 4 kg in a month), your body may respond by altering hormone levels, particularly those related to the menstrual cycle. The hypothalamus, which regulates the hormones that control menstruation, can become sensitive to changes in body weight and fat percentage. If your body perceives that it is in a state of low energy (due to weight loss), it may delay or even stop menstruation as a protective mechanism. This is often referred to as hypothalamic amenorrhea. Additionally, if you are experiencing fluctuations in weight, such as temporary water retention, this can also affect your cycle.
2. Does acupressure help with menstrual delays?
Acupressure may provide some relief for menstrual irregularities, but its effectiveness can vary from person to person. Some studies suggest that acupuncture and acupressure can help regulate menstrual cycles by improving blood flow and reducing stress, which is another factor that can contribute to menstrual irregularities. However, while these methods may help alleviate symptoms or promote relaxation, they are not guaranteed solutions for menstrual delays. It is essential to consult with a healthcare provider to explore comprehensive treatment options, especially if your menstrual irregularities persist.

3. Is there a possibility of pregnancy?
Given that you had sexual intercourse recently, there is always a possibility of pregnancy, even if you used protection. Condoms are generally effective, but they are not foolproof. If your menstrual cycle is typically regular and you are experiencing a delay, it may be wise to take a home pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy. If the test is negative and your period does not arrive soon, consider consulting with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and any underlying issues.

In summary, your weight loss efforts could indeed be influencing your menstrual cycle. It is crucial to maintain a balanced approach to weight management, ensuring that you are not losing weight too quickly, as this can lead to further complications. If you continue to experience irregularities, consider seeking advice from a healthcare professional who can provide personalized recommendations based on your health history and current situation. Additionally, if you are concerned about pregnancy, taking a test will provide clarity and help you make informed decisions moving forward.
