Difficulty achieving an erection?
Hello Doctor,
I am 27 years old and have a habit of masturbating about 2 to 3 times a week.
In the past, I would easily get an erection while watching adult films, but recently I find it difficult to achieve an erection while watching them.
Even manual stimulation is challenging.
However, I still experience morning erections.
I suspect that my increased exposure to adult films has diminished my excitement, leading to this lack of arousal.
Is my assumption incorrect?
Additionally, I am a novice in sexual experiences and have recently attempted to have intercourse with my girlfriend.
I can achieve an erection and maintain good hardness during foreplay, but I often lose my erection quickly when it comes time to put on a condom, which results in unsuccessful sexual intercourse.
After that, it is difficult to regain an erection, and I have to end things abruptly.
Do you think there is a problem here? I suspect it might be psychological, as I am concerned about the possibility of my girlfriend getting pregnant.
Is this assumption wrong?
Considering all of the above, I experience morning erections and can achieve an erection during intimate moments with my girlfriend, but I struggle to get an erection while watching adult films.
Additionally, I lose my erection easily when preparing to put on a condom.
What do you think is happening in my situation? Thank you!

Erectile issues can be complex and multifaceted, often involving both physiological and psychological factors. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of challenges related to arousal and performance, particularly in the context of pornography and sexual activity with your girlfriend.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that the human sexual response can be influenced by a variety of factors, including stress, anxiety, and even the type of stimulation one is accustomed to. Your observation that you find it difficult to achieve an erection while watching pornography, despite previously having no issues, could indeed be related to habituation. Over time, frequent exposure to pornography can lead to a desensitization effect, where the brain requires more intense or novel stimuli to achieve the same level of arousal. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as "porn-induced erectile dysfunction" (PIED).
The fact that you still experience morning erections (nocturnal penile tumescence) is a positive sign, indicating that your physiological ability to achieve an erection is intact. Morning erections are typically a result of hormonal fluctuations and are not directly influenced by psychological factors. This suggests that your erectile dysfunction may be more related to psychological factors, particularly when it comes to the context of sexual activity with your girlfriend and the anxiety surrounding it.
When you mention that you can achieve an erection when being intimate with your girlfriend but struggle when it comes time to use a condom, this could indicate performance anxiety. The fear of potential pregnancy or the pressure to perform can create a mental block that makes it difficult to maintain an erection. This is a common issue and can be exacerbated by the anxiety of wanting to please your partner while also managing your own fears.
To address these concerns, consider the following steps:
1. Open Communication: Talk to your girlfriend about your feelings and experiences. Open dialogue can reduce anxiety and create a more relaxed environment for intimacy.
2. Reduce Pornography Consumption: If you suspect that pornography is affecting your arousal, consider reducing your consumption or taking a break altogether. This can help reset your arousal patterns and improve your sexual experiences.
3. Practice Relaxation Techniques: Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or meditation. These can help reduce anxiety and improve your overall sexual experience.
4. Seek Professional Help: If these issues persist, consider consulting a healthcare professional or a therapist who specializes in sexual health. They can provide tailored advice and strategies to help you navigate these challenges.
5. Focus on Foreplay: Spend more time on foreplay and less on the pressure of penetration. This can help build arousal and reduce performance anxiety.
6. Explore Different Forms of Intimacy: Engaging in various forms of intimacy that do not involve penetration can help alleviate pressure and enhance your connection with your partner.
In conclusion, your situation appears to be a combination of psychological factors, particularly anxiety related to performance and the effects of habitual pornography use. By addressing these issues through communication, reducing reliance on pornography, and possibly seeking professional guidance, you can work towards improving your sexual health and experiences. Remember, it’s important to be patient with yourself as you navigate these challenges.
