Postoperative examination after adrenal benign tumor resection?
Hello Doctor, my family member underwent adrenal tumor removal at the beginning of the year.
The tumor was 4 centimeters in size and has been confirmed as benign after testing.
What follow-up items should be arranged post-surgery? We have already done an ultrasound and routine blood tests.
Is it necessary to schedule another CT scan? Thank you for your response.

Dear Ms.
CJ,
Thank you for your inquiry.
Here is my response: Generally, hormone levels can be assessed through tests such as serum cortisol to detect any abnormalities in the adrenal glands early on.
CT and MRI scans provide clear images of the renal contours, perirenal spaces, and the relationships between the kidneys and adjacent organs and structures.
They are more accurate and reliable than standard X-rays and ultrasound for identifying adrenal masses and characterizing them.
It is recommended to have CT and MRI scans annually as part of routine examinations.
Thank you for reaching out.
Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info
After undergoing surgery for a benign adrenal tumor, it is essential to have a structured follow-up plan to monitor your health and ensure that there are no complications or recurrences. Given that your family member had a 4 cm adrenal tumor that has been confirmed as benign, the post-surgery follow-up typically includes several key components.
Post-Surgery Follow-Up Expectations
1. Regular Clinical Assessments:
- Follow-up appointments with the surgeon or endocrinologist are crucial. These visits usually occur every 3 to 6 months for the first couple of years after surgery. During these visits, the physician will assess for any symptoms that may indicate complications or recurrence, such as hormonal imbalances or changes in blood pressure.
2. Imaging Studies:
- While ultrasound and routine blood tests are essential for monitoring, the need for additional imaging, such as a CT scan or MRI, depends on the individual case and the physician's judgment. In general, if the initial imaging and blood tests are normal and there are no concerning symptoms, a follow-up CT scan may not be immediately necessary. However, if there are any signs of complications or if the physician feels it is warranted, they may recommend a CT scan to ensure that there are no residual tumor tissues or other issues.
3. Hormonal Evaluation:
- Since adrenal tumors can affect hormone production, regular blood tests to evaluate adrenal function are important. This may include measuring levels of cortisol, aldosterone, and other hormones to ensure that the adrenal glands are functioning properly after the tumor removal.
4. Monitoring for Symptoms:
- Patients should be vigilant for any new symptoms that may arise post-surgery, such as changes in blood pressure, unexplained weight changes, or symptoms of hormonal imbalance (e.g., fatigue, mood changes, or changes in hair growth). Reporting these symptoms to the healthcare provider promptly is essential for timely intervention.
5. Lifestyle and Health Maintenance:
- Encouraging a healthy lifestyle post-surgery is vital. This includes maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and managing stress. These factors can significantly contribute to overall health and well-being, especially after surgery.
6. Long-Term Follow-Up:
- Depending on the initial findings and the patient's overall health, long-term follow-up may be necessary. Some patients may require annual evaluations for several years, especially if there are any risk factors for adrenal tumors or other endocrine disorders.
Conclusion
In summary, after the surgical removal of a benign adrenal tumor, a comprehensive follow-up plan is essential to monitor recovery and ensure that there are no complications. While routine ultrasound and blood tests are standard, the decision to perform additional imaging like a CT scan should be based on clinical judgment and the presence of any concerning symptoms. Regular follow-ups with healthcare providers, monitoring for hormonal changes, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are all integral parts of the post-surgery care plan. Always consult with the healthcare provider for personalized recommendations based on the specific case and health status.
