Menstrual Issues - Discharge
I would like to ask about experiencing a small amount of brown discharge suddenly six days after the menstrual period.
There were two instances of unprotected sexual intercourse.
What could be the possible reasons for this?
Miss Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/12/02
Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
There are many possible reasons for this, including cervical inflammation, irregular menstruation, ovulation bleeding, cervical polyps, uterine tumors, and pregnancy-related bleeding.
A thorough examination may be necessary to confirm the cause.
Sincerely, Dr.

Brown discharge after a menstrual period can be concerning, especially when accompanied by sexual activity without contraception. There are several potential causes for this phenomenon, and understanding them can help alleviate your worries.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that brown discharge is often just old blood that is taking longer to exit the body. During menstruation, the uterine lining sheds, and if the blood takes longer to leave the uterus, it can oxidize and appear brown. This is particularly common at the end of a menstrual period, but it can also occur a few days later.
In your case, since the brown discharge appeared six days after your period, it could still be remnants of your menstrual flow. However, there are other factors to consider, especially given your recent sexual activity.
1. Ovulation: Depending on your menstrual cycle, you may be experiencing ovulation spotting. Ovulation typically occurs around the midpoint of your cycle, but some women experience light spotting when they ovulate, which can appear brownish. This is usually not a cause for concern.
2. Hormonal Changes: If you have recently stopped using hormonal contraceptives or have experienced changes in your hormonal levels due to stress, weight fluctuations, or other factors, this can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting. Hormonal imbalances can cause the uterine lining to shed irregularly, resulting in brown discharge.
3. Implantation Bleeding: If you have had unprotected intercourse, there is a possibility of pregnancy. Implantation bleeding can occur when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, which may happen around the time your next period is due. This bleeding is typically light and can be brown or pink in color.
4. Infections: Certain infections, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), can cause abnormal discharge. If the discharge has a foul odor, is accompanied by itching, or is associated with pelvic pain, it’s essential to seek medical attention.
5. Cervical or Uterine Issues: Conditions such as polyps, fibroids, or other abnormalities in the uterus or cervix can lead to unusual bleeding or discharge. If you experience persistent brown discharge or any other concerning symptoms, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.
Given your situation, if the brown discharge continues, increases in volume, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or unusual odor, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a physical examination, possibly conduct tests, and provide a more accurate diagnosis based on your specific circumstances.
In summary, while brown discharge after your period can be normal, especially if it’s light and not accompanied by other symptoms, it’s essential to monitor your body’s signals. If you have concerns, especially related to potential pregnancy or infections, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for peace of mind and appropriate care.
