After a colonoscopy, there is blood in the stool... (I am the one from the previous article)

Hello Doctor: I forgot to mention in my previous message that I have been experiencing dizziness and nausea before and after my first colonoscopy.
Later, Dr.
Ma-Kai prescribed me two months of Laxative (Lactulose), and even after almost finishing it, I still feel dizzy and nauseous.
After my second colonoscopy, the frequency of dizziness increased to almost once or twice a day, and the nausea remains unchanged.
Subsequently, at Tai-X Hospital, I was also prescribed two months of rectal medication (a white liquid) for bowel preparation, but after using it for two weeks, I still have blood in my stools with mucus and blood clots...
Should I continue taking the medication and follow up? Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Hello, the symptoms of dizziness are mostly unrelated to gastrointestinal diseases and gastrointestinal examinations.
If there are still changes in bowel movements, continuous monitoring and examination are necessary.

Post-colonoscopy symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and blood in the stool can be concerning and warrant careful consideration. After undergoing a colonoscopy, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some discomfort, including mild dizziness or nausea, which may be attributed to sedation or the bowel preparation process. However, persistent symptoms like daily dizziness and nausea, especially if they worsen, should be evaluated further.

The presence of blood in the stool, particularly if it is accompanied by mucus or clots, raises additional concerns. Blood in the stool can arise from various sources, including hemorrhoids, anal fissures, diverticular disease, or even more serious conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or colorectal cancer. Given your history of colonoscopy and the ongoing symptoms, it is crucial to differentiate between benign causes and more serious underlying issues.

In your case, the dizziness and nausea could be side effects of the medications you are taking, such as the laxatives or any other prescribed medications. It is essential to communicate these symptoms to your healthcare provider, as they may need to adjust your treatment plan or investigate further. Additionally, if you are experiencing significant blood loss or changes in your stool consistency, it is vital to seek medical attention promptly.

Regarding the medications you mentioned, such as "樂瑪可" (Laxative) and "阿腸克阮腸劑" (a type of enema), it is essential to follow your doctor's advice on their use. If you have been using these medications for an extended period without improvement in your symptoms, it may be time to reassess your treatment strategy. Continuing to take medications that do not alleviate your symptoms could lead to further complications, such as electrolyte imbalances or dependency on laxatives for bowel movements.

In summary, while some post-colonoscopy symptoms can be normal, persistent dizziness, nausea, and blood in the stool should not be ignored. It is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, report all symptoms accurately, and follow their recommendations regarding medication and further diagnostic evaluations. If your symptoms worsen or new symptoms arise, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these concerns promptly can help prevent potential complications.
