Burning sensation. Foreign body sensation?
Hello, recently I have been experiencing a burning sensation in my right eye, along with a feeling of something foreign in it.
I also notice that my peripheral vision in the right eye is not as wide as in the left eye (I have covered each eye alternately to compare, and the left eye has a wider field of vision).
I have measured my intraocular pressure, and it is within the normal range.
Could you please advise me on what the issue might be?

Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing some discomfort in your right eye, characterized by a burning sensation and a feeling of having a foreign body present. Additionally, you mentioned that your peripheral vision in the right eye seems less expansive compared to your left eye. Let's break down these symptoms and explore potential causes.
1. Burning Sensation and Foreign Body Feeling: The burning sensation in your eye could be attributed to several factors. Common causes include dry eye syndrome, allergies, or irritation from environmental factors such as smoke, dust, or chemicals. Dry eyes occur when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This can lead to a sensation of burning, grittiness, or a feeling that something is in your eye. Allergies can also cause similar symptoms, often accompanied by redness, itching, and tearing.
2. Reduced Peripheral Vision: The perception of reduced peripheral vision in your right eye could be related to several conditions. One possibility is that there may be an issue with the retina or optic nerve in that eye. Conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, or even a stroke affecting the visual pathways can lead to changes in peripheral vision. However, since you mentioned that your intraocular pressure is within normal limits, this may help rule out glaucoma as a cause.
3. Potential Causes:
- Corneal Abrasion or Foreign Body: If there is a scratch on the cornea or a foreign body lodged in the eye, it can cause significant discomfort and a burning sensation. A thorough examination by an eye care professional can help identify this.
- Conjunctivitis: Inflammation of the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the white part of the eye) can lead to burning and a feeling of grittiness. This can be caused by infections (viral or bacterial) or allergies.
- Uveitis: Inflammation of the uvea (the middle layer of the eye) can also cause pain, redness, and vision changes. This condition often requires prompt medical attention.
- Optic Nerve Issues: If there is an issue with the optic nerve, such as inflammation or damage, it could potentially affect your vision and cause discomfort.
4. Recommendations:
- Consult an Eye Care Professional: Given your symptoms, it is crucial to see an eye care specialist for a comprehensive eye examination. They can perform tests to evaluate the health of your cornea, retina, and optic nerve, and determine if there is any underlying condition that needs to be addressed.
- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that environmental factors are contributing to your symptoms, try to avoid smoke, dust, and other irritants. Using artificial tears can help alleviate dryness and irritation.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, such as increased pain, changes in vision, or the development of new symptoms. If your condition worsens, seek medical attention promptly.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to common issues such as dry eyes or allergies, they could also indicate more serious conditions that require medical evaluation. It's essential to consult with an eye care professional to ensure that any potential problems are identified and treated appropriately. Your eye health is vital, and timely intervention can help prevent complications.
