Extraction of molar due to caries and waiting for the eruption of wisdom teeth to fill the space?
How long should I expect to wait for my wisdom tooth to erupt after having my upper left second molar extracted due to decay (the wisdom tooth is still embedded in the gum and is not painful)? If it takes a long time for the wisdom tooth to come in, are there any other treatments that can help it erupt? I would prefer to avoid dental implants.

Dear Mr.
Ah-Lin,
Hello! As mentioned, extracting a decayed molar while waiting for the wisdom tooth to erupt can provide an opportunity for it to come in, but there is also a possibility that it may not erupt if the roots of the wisdom tooth have already formed.
Please communicate more with your dentist.
Thank you! Wishing you safety!
Sincerely,
Dr.

When it comes to the eruption of wisdom teeth (third molars) following the extraction of a molar due to decay, several factors come into play. Generally, the timeline for wisdom teeth to erupt can vary widely among individuals. On average, wisdom teeth may begin to emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, but this can be influenced by genetics, the position of the teeth, and the overall dental health of the individual.
In your case, since the left upper second molar has been extracted due to decay and the wisdom tooth is still embedded in the gums without any pain, it is possible that the wisdom tooth may take several months to a few years to fully erupt. If the wisdom tooth is positioned correctly and there is enough space in the dental arch, it may eventually come in to fill the gap left by the extracted molar. However, if the wisdom tooth's root has already formed or if it is impacted (meaning it is unable to fully emerge due to blockage by other teeth or insufficient space), it may not erupt at all.
If you find that the wisdom tooth has not erupted after a significant period—typically around six months to a year—it is advisable to consult with your dentist or an oral surgeon. They can assess the situation through X-rays to determine the position of the wisdom tooth and whether it is likely to erupt. If the wisdom tooth is not expected to come in, or if it is impacted, there are alternative treatments to consider.
One option is to explore orthodontic treatment to create space for the wisdom tooth to emerge. This could involve the use of braces or other orthodontic appliances to align the teeth properly. However, this approach may take time and requires a commitment to regular dental visits.
Another alternative is to consider a dental bridge or partial denture if the wisdom tooth does not erupt and you wish to avoid dental implants. A bridge involves placing crowns on the adjacent teeth and using them to support a false tooth in the gap. This can provide a functional and aesthetic solution without the need for an implant.
It is essential to maintain regular dental check-ups during this waiting period. Your dentist can monitor the situation and provide guidance on the best course of action based on the development of your wisdom teeth and your overall dental health. Additionally, if you experience any pain, swelling, or other symptoms, it is crucial to seek prompt dental care.
In summary, while waiting for your wisdom tooth to erupt after the extraction of a molar, it could take several months to a few years. If it does not emerge within a reasonable timeframe, consult your dentist for further evaluation and potential treatment options. Regular monitoring and communication with your dental care provider will be key to managing your dental health effectively.
