Missed menstruation?
Hello doctor, since I started menstruating in puberty, my periods have rarely been on time.
Previously, I had a regular cycle of once every one and a half months, but that has also become irregular again.
My last period was at the beginning of October, but it only came after taking medication to induce menstruation.
I also took emergency contraception at the end of August; could this be affecting my current irregular cycles? I am certain that I am not pregnant.
When I visited a gynecologist, the doctor mentioned that I am not ovulating at all, and the ultrasound showed that my uterus is normal.
Could it be that I have elevated prolactin levels? If I want to get a blood test, should I go to a small clinic or a large hospital?

Hello, I apologize for not being able to provide a diagnosis based on what you've described.
If everything is fine, I recommend visiting a hospital for a detailed examination by an obstetrician-gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding irregular menstrual cycles can be quite complex, as there are numerous factors that can influence a woman's menstrual health. Irregular periods, also known as oligomenorrhea, can be caused by a variety of reasons, including hormonal imbalances, lifestyle factors, and underlying medical conditions.
In your case, it seems you have experienced irregular menstrual cycles since puberty, with periods occurring every one and a half months at times, and more recently, you had to take medication to induce menstruation. The use of emergency contraception (the "morning-after pill") can indeed affect your menstrual cycle. These medications work by altering hormone levels to prevent ovulation, and they can lead to temporary changes in your cycle, including delayed or irregular periods.
The fact that you mentioned not ovulating, as indicated by your gynecologist, is significant. Anovulation (the absence of ovulation) can be caused by several factors, including hormonal imbalances such as elevated prolactin levels (which can occur due to stress, certain medications, or other health issues), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and more. High prolactin levels can indeed disrupt your menstrual cycle and lead to irregular periods.
If you are considering blood tests to check your hormone levels, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider who specializes in reproductive health, such as a gynecologist or an endocrinologist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and determine which specific tests are necessary based on your symptoms and medical history. Blood tests can include checking levels of hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and prolactin, among others.
As for where to get these tests done, both small clinics and larger hospitals can perform blood tests. However, if you have a complex case or if you want a more thorough evaluation, a larger hospital or a specialized clinic may be more beneficial. They often have more resources and specialists who can interpret the results in the context of your overall health.
It is important to seek help if you experience significant changes in your menstrual cycle, such as very heavy bleeding, prolonged periods, or if you have concerns about your reproductive health. Irregular periods can sometimes indicate underlying health issues that may require treatment, so it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can guide you through the process.
In summary, irregular periods can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, lifestyle changes, and medical conditions. Since you have experienced these issues for a long time, it would be wise to pursue further evaluation and testing to determine the underlying cause. Don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for guidance and support in managing your menstrual health.
