Suture mark
Hello Doctor: About ten days ago, I underwent a surgical procedure for the excision and suturing of acne scars on my face.
A few days ago, after the stitches were removed, I noticed that the indentations caused by the sutures have persisted for five days.
They appear as marks resembling railroad tracks.
I would like to ask if these indentations will disappear, and how long it might take? Or have they formed new depressions that cannot be restored? Thank you for your response.

More Info
After undergoing acne scar surgery, it is common to have concerns about the appearance of stitch marks or any residual scarring. The marks you are observing, often referred to as "stitch marks" or "suture marks," are typically a result of the sutures used during the surgical procedure. These marks can appear as linear indentations or raised areas on the skin, resembling the shape of the stitches.
In most cases, stitch marks will fade over time. The healing process for the skin can vary significantly from person to person, influenced by factors such as skin type, age, overall health, and adherence to post-operative care instructions. Generally, the initial redness and indentation from the stitches may take several weeks to months to diminish. Most patients notice a significant improvement within 3 to 6 months post-surgery, but complete fading can take up to a year or more.
To promote optimal healing and minimize the appearance of stitch marks, consider the following recommendations:
1. Follow Post-Operative Care Instructions: Adhering to the care regimen provided by your surgeon is crucial. This may include keeping the area clean, avoiding sun exposure, and applying any prescribed topical treatments.
2. Moisturization: Keeping the skin well-hydrated can aid in the healing process. Use a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer to help maintain skin elasticity.
3. Sun Protection: Protecting the healing skin from sun exposure is vital. UV rays can darken scars and make them more prominent. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.
4. Silicone Gel Sheets or Silicone Gel: These products can be effective in reducing the appearance of scars. They work by hydrating the scar tissue and creating a protective barrier. Consult your surgeon about when to start using these products.
5. Massage Therapy: Once the incision has fully healed, gentle massage of the scar tissue can help break down collagen fibers and improve the appearance of the scar. Be sure to consult your healthcare provider before starting any massage therapy.
6. Healthy Lifestyle: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamins A, C, and E, can support skin healing. Staying hydrated and avoiding smoking can also contribute positively to your skin's recovery.
7. Consultation with a Dermatologist: If you notice that the stitch marks are not fading or if you have concerns about their appearance, consider consulting a dermatologist. They may recommend treatments such as laser therapy, chemical peels, or microneedling to improve the texture and appearance of the scars.
In conclusion, while stitch marks from acne scar surgery can be concerning, they typically fade over time with proper care. Patience is key, as the healing process can take several months. If you have ongoing concerns or if the marks do not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and potential treatment options. Remember, every individual's healing journey is unique, and with time and care, many patients see significant improvement in the appearance of their scars.
