Experiencing tremors when closing the eyes?
Hello, doctor.
Is it normal to feel a shaking sensation in front of my eyes when I close them? Occasionally, I also notice a slight shaking when my eyes are open, but it doesn't affect my vision.
It seems that when I concentrate on a specific area while my eyes are closed, I feel that area shaking.
I'm not sure if this indicates a problem or if it's just the sensation of blood vessels or muscles around my eyes twitching.
Although I feel there isn't much of an issue, I can't help but worry, and when I close my eyes, I become overly aware of it, which is quite bothersome.
I hope you can provide some insight, thank you! P.S.
I recently had my retina checked, and there were no issues (without dilation).

Hello,
The eye twitching you are experiencing may be related to nystagmus, which is often congenital.
If it does not affect your vision, it is generally not a concern.
However, I recommend visiting a hospital with a neurology department to have a physician evaluate your condition.
In Taiwan, the ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital is available:
Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Please note that online responses are for reference only, and it is essential to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility if necessary.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.
Best regards,
Gao Pilin

Experiencing sensations of shaking or tremors in your eyes, especially when they are closed, can be a perplexing issue. It's understandable to feel concerned about any unusual sensations in such a sensitive area. However, it’s important to note that what you are experiencing may not necessarily indicate a serious problem.
When you close your eyes, you may become more aware of the sensations around your eyes, including the muscles and blood vessels. The eye muscles are constantly in motion, even when your eyes are closed, as they are responsible for maintaining the position of the eyeball and facilitating various functions such as blinking and focusing. This can sometimes lead to a perception of tremors or shaking, especially if you are concentrating on that area.
Here are some potential explanations for the sensations you are experiencing:
1. Muscle Contractions: The muscles around your eyes can contract involuntarily, leading to a sensation of shaking. This is often benign and can occur due to fatigue, stress, or even caffeine intake.
2. Eye Fatigue: If you have been using your eyes extensively, especially for activities like reading or using digital devices, you may experience eye fatigue. This can lead to various sensations, including tremors or twitching.
3. Nervous System Responses: The nervous system can sometimes cause sensations that feel like shaking or tremors. This can be due to anxiety or heightened awareness of bodily sensations, which can make you more sensitive to normal muscle movements.
4. Blood Flow: You might also be feeling the pulsation of blood vessels around your eyes, which can be more noticeable when your eyes are closed and you are in a quiet state.
5. Psychological Factors: If you are anxious or worried about your eye health, this can heighten your awareness of bodily sensations, making you more likely to notice things that you might otherwise ignore.
Given that you have recently had your retina checked and found no issues, it is likely that your symptoms are benign. However, if the sensations persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as vision changes, pain, or discomfort, it would be prudent to consult with an eye care professional for further evaluation.
To help manage your concerns, consider the following tips:
- Reduce Eye Strain: Take regular breaks from screens and ensure you are using proper lighting when reading or working.
- Relaxation Techniques: Engage in relaxation exercises or mindfulness practices to help reduce anxiety and focus on calming your mind.
- Stay Hydrated and Maintain a Healthy Diet: Proper hydration and nutrition can support overall eye health.
- Limit Caffeine and Stress: Reducing caffeine intake and managing stress can help alleviate muscle tension around the eyes.
In summary, while the sensations you are experiencing can be concerning, they are often benign and related to normal muscle activity or awareness. However, if you have any doubts or if the symptoms change, seeking professional advice is always a good course of action.
