Having two menstrual periods in one month??????????
Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycle has typically started around the beginning of the month, and for the past six months, the first day of my period has been consistent within a day, lasting about 6-7 days.
It has been very regular, but after the fourth day, my menstrual flow tends to turn brown and gradually lightens.
This month, my period started on December 1 and ended on December 8.
After that, I had unprotected sexual intercourse on December 18 and noticed yellow-brown discharge with a bit of pink blood on the panty liner.
I initially suspected it might be related to my diet (ginger duck).
On December 19, there was also blood on the panty liner, which was brownish-red, but not bright red, and I needed to change it approximately every three hours.
My abdomen feels slightly uncomfortable.
This morning, December 20, the blood flow seems to have decreased.
I would like to ask if this could be ovulation bleeding or if I might be pregnant? Should I consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner or a Western doctor, or is it something I can ignore?
S, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/12/20

It could be ovulation bleeding.
If you continue to experience discomfort, I recommend seeing a gynecologist.

Understanding irregular menstrual cycles can be quite complex, as they can be influenced by a variety of factors including hormonal changes, lifestyle, and underlying health conditions. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced a shift in your menstrual cycle, which has raised some concerns regarding potential pregnancy or other issues.
Firstly, it is important to note that menstrual cycles can naturally vary from month to month due to several factors. Stress, changes in diet, exercise habits, and even travel can all impact the regularity of your cycle. In your case, you mentioned that your periods were regular for about six months, but you are now experiencing some irregularities, including changes in color and flow.
The presence of brown or dark red blood, especially towards the end of your period, is typically old blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. This is usually not a cause for concern and can be a normal part of the menstrual cycle. However, the appearance of yellow-brown discharge and pink blood after sexual intercourse could indicate several possibilities.
One potential explanation for the symptoms you are experiencing is ovulation bleeding. Some women experience light spotting around the time of ovulation, which can occur about midway through the menstrual cycle. This bleeding is usually light and can be pink or brown in color. However, given that you have had unprotected intercourse, it is also important to consider the possibility of implantation bleeding, which can occur if a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This type of bleeding is typically light and may be accompanied by mild cramping.
Given your symptoms and the timing of your sexual activity, it would be prudent to take a home pregnancy test if your period does not arrive as expected in the coming days. Pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. If the test is positive, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and prenatal care.
If the test is negative and your irregular bleeding continues, or if you experience significant discomfort, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. Both Western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can offer insights and treatments for menstrual irregularities. Western medicine typically focuses on hormonal evaluations, ultrasounds, and blood tests to determine the underlying cause, while TCM may offer herbal remedies and acupuncture to help regulate your cycle.
In summary, while your symptoms could potentially indicate ovulation bleeding or early signs of pregnancy, it is essential to monitor your situation closely. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms worsen, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Regular check-ups can help ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly, allowing you to maintain your reproductive health.
