My eyes feel strange?

I used to see dark spots occasionally, but this morning when I woke up and opened my eyes, I kept seeing a visual afterimage that was flickering around my eyes.
This happened a few months ago as well.
Could it be because I've been looking at my phone too much? I went for an eye examination, but nothing was found.
Additionally, I have strabismus, which makes it very difficult for me to read small text on my phone, and I often don't know where to focus my eyes.
Thank you, doctor, for your response.

Ms. L, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/12/21

Dr. He Jianxian reply Ophthalmology

It is recommended that you visit an ophthalmologist for a dilated fundus examination.
If the retina is found to be normal, you can be reassured.

Understanding visual disturbances can be quite complex, as they can stem from a variety of underlying issues. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing visual disturbances such as seeing afterimages or visual "static," particularly upon waking, along with difficulties focusing on small text due to your strabismus (crossed eyes). Let’s delve into the potential causes and solutions for these symptoms.

Potential Causes
1. Visual Fatigue: Prolonged use of digital devices, such as smartphones, can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. Symptoms include blurred vision, dry eyes, and difficulty focusing. This is particularly relevant if you spend long hours looking at screens without adequate breaks.

2. Strabismus: Your condition of strabismus can contribute to visual disturbances. When the eyes are misaligned, it can lead to double vision or difficulty in focusing, especially on small text. This misalignment can cause the brain to struggle with processing visual information, leading to fatigue and discomfort.

3. Afterimages: The phenomenon of seeing afterimages or visual "static" can occur due to overstimulation of the photoreceptors in your eyes. This can happen after looking at bright screens or lights, and it may be exacerbated by fatigue or strain.

4. Refractive Errors: Conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism can also contribute to visual disturbances. If your prescription glasses are not up to date, or if you have not been wearing them consistently, this could lead to increased visual strain.

5. Neurological Factors: Although less common, persistent visual disturbances can sometimes indicate underlying neurological issues. If the symptoms are severe or accompanied by other neurological signs (like headaches or changes in coordination), further evaluation may be necessary.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Regular Eye Exams: It’s crucial to have regular eye examinations, especially since you have a history of strabismus. An eye care professional can assess your visual acuity and determine if your prescription needs updating. They can also evaluate the alignment of your eyes and recommend appropriate treatments.

2. Corrective Lenses: If you have refractive errors, wearing the correct prescription glasses can significantly reduce visual strain. If you are already wearing glasses, ensure that they are appropriate for your current vision needs.

3. Limit Screen Time: To alleviate digital eye strain, try to limit your screen time. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This helps relax the eye muscles.

4. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce glare on screens. Adjust the brightness of your devices to a comfortable level and consider using blue light filters.

5. Eye Exercises: Engage in eye exercises that can help improve focus and reduce strain. Simple exercises include focusing on a distant object for a few seconds, then shifting your gaze to a closer object.

6. Consult a Specialist: If your symptoms persist or worsen, consider consulting an ophthalmologist or a neuro-ophthalmologist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and rule out any serious conditions.

7. Manage Stress: Since you mentioned that you are under academic pressure, managing stress through relaxation techniques, adequate sleep, and breaks can also help reduce visual disturbances.

In conclusion, while visual disturbances can be concerning, many of the symptoms you describe can be managed effectively with proper care and attention. Regular check-ups with an eye care professional, combined with good eye hygiene and stress management, can significantly improve your visual comfort and overall eye health.
