Extra Skin Near the Glans: When to See a Urologist - Urology

There is an extra fold of skin beside the glans?

Today, while cleaning the glans, I noticed a strip of extra skin about two centimeters below the urethra on the glans.
It is elongated and quite prominent, approximately half a centimeter in size.
I recognized it as skin because when I pulled on it, it tugged at the skin below.
Should I see a doctor about this?

When it comes to noticing any unusual changes in the skin, especially in sensitive areas such as the glans (the head of the penis), it is always prudent to consult a healthcare professional. The presence of extra skin or a noticeable growth near the glans can be concerning, and while it may not always indicate a serious condition, it is essential to have it evaluated by a urologist or a dermatologist.

The extra skin you described, located about two centimeters below the glans, could be a number of things. It might be a normal anatomical variation, such as a skin fold or a remnant of the frenulum, which is the band of tissue that connects the underside of the glans to the shaft of the penis. However, it could also be a sign of a condition such as a skin tag, a wart, or even a benign cyst. In some cases, it could be related to conditions like balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or other dermatological issues.

Here are some reasons why you should consider seeing a urologist:
1. Persistent Symptoms: If the extra skin is accompanied by symptoms such as pain, itching, bleeding, or discharge, it is crucial to seek medical advice. These symptoms could indicate an infection or another underlying condition that requires treatment.

2. Changes Over Time: If you notice that the extra skin changes in size, color, or texture, this could be a sign of a more serious issue, and a healthcare professional should evaluate it.

3. Concerns About Cancer: While rare, any new growth or change in the skin should be assessed to rule out skin cancer or other malignancies. Early detection is key in managing any potential health issues.

4. Psychological Impact: Sometimes, the presence of unusual skin can cause anxiety or distress. A urologist can provide reassurance and help you understand what you are experiencing.

5. Treatment Options: If the extra skin is determined to be problematic, a urologist can discuss treatment options, which may include removal if necessary.

In terms of what to expect during your visit, the urologist will likely conduct a physical examination and may ask about your medical history, any symptoms you are experiencing, and any changes you have noticed. Depending on their findings, they may recommend further tests or procedures.

In conclusion, while it may be tempting to dismiss the extra skin as a benign issue, it is always better to err on the side of caution. Consulting a urologist will provide you with clarity and peace of mind regarding your health. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing concerns early can lead to better outcomes.
