Does medication for cystitis affect menstruation?
Hello, doctor.
I started experiencing frequent urination on January 1st, and I visited both a family medicine clinic and an obstetrics and gynecology clinic on January 3rd and 5th, respectively.
Currently, I am taking the medications prescribed by the gynecologist, which include Ulex 500 mg, Buscopan, and Scanol 500.
I would like to know if taking these medications will affect my menstrual cycle.
My last period was on December 2nd, but I have not yet had my period this month, which is about 3 days late (I started taking the bladder infection medication on January 3rd).
Additionally, could you advise whether antibiotics should be taken before or after meals, or if it is acceptable to take them at any time? Thank you.
P.S.
I have a history of urinary retention leading to hematuria and experience frequent urination issues every few months.
I have not engaged in sexual intercourse.

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, antibiotics generally do not affect menstruation.
It is better to take them after meals.
Developing a habit of drinking plenty of water and not holding in urine can help reduce the risk of bladder infections.
Wishing you good health!

When it comes to bladder infection medications and their potential effects on the menstrual cycle, it's important to understand the pharmacological properties of the medications you are taking and how they interact with your body. The medications you've mentioned—Ulex (likely a combination of herbal ingredients), Buscopan (an antispasmodic), and Scanol (an antibiotic)—each have different mechanisms of action and side effects.
1. Impact on Menstrual Cycle: Generally, medications used to treat bladder infections, such as antibiotics, do not directly affect the menstrual cycle. However, stress from illness, changes in hormone levels, or even the body's response to infection can lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle. If your period is delayed, it may not be solely due to the medications but could also be influenced by factors such as stress, illness, or changes in your routine.
2. Antibiotics and Menstrual Cycle: Antibiotics can sometimes disrupt the balance of bacteria in the body, including those in the vaginal flora, which can lead to yeast infections or other issues that might indirectly affect your menstrual cycle. However, there is no strong evidence to suggest that antibiotics directly delay menstruation.
3. Timing of Antibiotics: As for the timing of taking antibiotics, it is generally recommended to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the medication's packaging. Some antibiotics are better absorbed when taken with food, while others may be more effective on an empty stomach. For instance, Buscopan can be taken before or after meals, but it's best to take antibiotics as prescribed—if your doctor has specified a particular time, it's important to adhere to that for optimal effectiveness.
4. Consulting Your Doctor: Given your history of urinary issues and the current symptoms you are experiencing, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider if your period does not arrive soon or if you have any other concerns. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current medications.
5. Other Considerations: If you have a history of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and blood in your urine, it's crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any worsening symptoms, such as increased pain, fever, or persistent blood in urine, seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while the medications you are taking for a bladder infection are not likely to directly affect your menstrual cycle, other factors related to your health and stress levels may play a role. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding medication and consult them with any concerns about your menstrual cycle or other health issues.
