Can I get pregnant?

Is the menstrual period considered a safe period? My menstrual cycle has always been regular, and I have never taken contraceptive pills.
During the last few days of my period, there was some foreplay, but there was no ejaculation.
I'm concerned about the possibility of pre-ejaculate fluid on my penis touching the external genitalia, and I only touched a little inside.
Could this lead to pregnancy?

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/01/09

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances of pregnancy are low, but it is always best to take preventive measures beforehand.
Do not rely on the safe period.
Wishing you good health.

The question of whether you can get pregnant during your period is a common concern, particularly for those who have regular menstrual cycles and are not using any form of contraception. To address this question, we need to consider the biology of the menstrual cycle, the timing of ovulation, and the viability of sperm.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that a typical menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation, which is when an egg is released from the ovary, usually occurs around the midpoint of the cycle, approximately 14 days before the start of the next period. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that if you have unprotected intercourse in the days leading up to ovulation, there is a possibility of sperm being present when the egg is released.

Now, regarding the question of whether you can get pregnant during your period, the answer is that while it is less likely, it is not impossible. If you have a shorter menstrual cycle (for example, 21 days), you could ovulate soon after your period ends. If you engage in sexual activity towards the end of your period, and sperm are present, there is a chance that they could still be viable when ovulation occurs. Additionally, if your cycle is irregular, predicting ovulation becomes even more challenging, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy.

In your specific scenario, you mentioned engaging in sexual activity during the last few days of your period, with no ejaculation but concern about pre-ejaculate fluid. Pre-ejaculate, or pre-cum, can contain sperm, although the concentration is typically lower than in ejaculate. If any sperm were present in the pre-ejaculate and came into contact with the vaginal canal, there is a potential risk of pregnancy, albeit low.

To summarize, while the likelihood of getting pregnant during your period is generally low, it is not zero. Factors such as the length of your menstrual cycle, the timing of ovulation, and the presence of sperm can all influence the risk of pregnancy. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider using contraception consistently to reduce the risk. If you have further questions or concerns about your menstrual cycle, fertility, or contraception, consulting with a healthcare provider can provide personalized guidance and support.
