Post-abortion bleeding after medical abortion?

Hello doctor, I would like to inquire about my situation.
I am currently 7-11 days post-medication abortion and have been experiencing brown discharge.
On the morning of the 12th day, I returned for a follow-up appointment, and the doctor performed an ultrasound confirming that everything was completely cleared.
The bleeding was considered normal, and I was advised to monitor the situation.
However, in the afternoon, I started to experience red bleeding, which is about the same volume as day four of my menstrual period.
Is this considered normal? I am not currently taking any uterine contraction medications or herbal remedies.

ka, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/01/10

Hello, I apologize for not being able to provide a diagnosis based on your description.
It is possible that you are experiencing uterine bleeding.
If you continue to feel unwell, I recommend returning to your original obstetrician-gynecologist for further evaluation.
Wishing you good health.

After a medical abortion, it is common to experience a variety of bleeding patterns as your body adjusts and expels the pregnancy tissue. In your case, you mentioned that you have been experiencing brown discharge for the first 7-11 days, which is typically old blood and can be a normal part of the healing process. The fact that your doctor confirmed via ultrasound that everything was cleared out is reassuring, as it indicates that there are no remaining tissues that could cause complications.

On day 12, when you started to notice bright red blood that was similar in volume to what you would expect on the fourth day of your menstrual cycle, this can also be considered within the range of normal post-abortion bleeding. After a medical abortion, it is not unusual for women to experience a resurgence of bleeding after a period of lighter discharge. This can occur as the uterus continues to contract and expel any remaining blood or tissue, or simply as part of the normal healing process.

It is important to monitor the bleeding. If the bleeding remains moderate and does not increase significantly, it is generally not a cause for concern. However, you should be vigilant for signs that could indicate complications, such as:
1. Heavy Bleeding: If you soak through two or more pads in an hour for two consecutive hours, this could indicate a problem, and you should seek medical attention immediately.

2. Severe Pain: While some cramping is expected, severe or worsening pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications may warrant a visit to your healthcare provider.

3. Fever or Chills: These symptoms could indicate an infection and should be evaluated by a doctor.

4. Foul-Smelling Discharge: This could also be a sign of infection and should be reported to your healthcare provider.

In your case, since you are not currently taking any uterine contraction medications or herbal remedies like "生化湯" (Shenghua Decoction), it is essential to follow your doctor's advice regarding observation. If the bleeding continues or worsens, or if you develop any concerning symptoms, it would be prudent to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while your current bleeding pattern may be normal, it is essential to stay alert for any signs of complications. Regular follow-up with your healthcare provider is crucial to ensure your recovery is progressing as expected. If you have any doubts or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for guidance. Your health and peace of mind are paramount during this time.
