After having wisdom teeth removed, there may be numbness or loss of sensation in the chin and lips?
I had my impacted wisdom tooth extracted three days ago, and my chin and lips are still numb, feeling like the anesthesia hasn't worn off.
I didn't feel any discomfort during the extraction, which took about 15 minutes.
Now, I often experience a tingling sensation, and the numb areas feel itchy, which is quite uncomfortable.
The clinic only suggested taking B vitamins.
Currently, I have been prescribed antibiotics and steroids.
How long will it take to recover? How can I determine if the nerve is damaged or severed? If it is severed, will I still feel a tingling sensation? Thank you.

Hello: It is recommended to have regular follow-up visits at the original clinic for observation and treatment, usually for about six months.
Additionally, you may also seek consultation with a neurologist.
Wishing you peace and good health.

After undergoing wisdom tooth extraction, particularly for impacted teeth, it is not uncommon to experience numbness in the chin and lip area. This can be concerning, especially if the numbness persists for several days post-surgery. The numbness you are experiencing is likely related to the inferior alveolar nerve, which runs close to the lower wisdom teeth. During the extraction, this nerve can be bruised or, in some cases, damaged, leading to sensations of numbness or tingling.
The symptoms you describe, such as the feeling of electric shocks and itching in the numb area, can indicate nerve irritation or recovery. It is important to note that while some degree of numbness can be expected immediately after the procedure due to local anesthesia, prolonged numbness lasting beyond a few days may warrant further evaluation.
In terms of treatment, your dentist's recommendation to take B vitamins is aimed at supporting nerve health, as B vitamins, particularly B12, play a crucial role in nerve regeneration. The antibiotics and steroids prescribed are likely intended to prevent infection and reduce inflammation, respectively.
Recovery time can vary significantly from person to person. In many cases, if the nerve has been bruised, patients may start to regain sensation within a few weeks to a few months. However, if the nerve has been severed, the recovery may take longer, and in some cases, the numbness may be permanent.
To determine whether the nerve is damaged or severed, a dental professional may conduct a clinical examination and possibly imaging studies. Signs of nerve damage can include persistent numbness, tingling, or altered sensation in the affected area. If the nerve is completely severed, the sensation may not return, and you might continue to experience numbness or abnormal sensations.
If you are concerned about the numbness and the sensations you are experiencing, it is crucial to follow up with your oral surgeon or dentist. They may recommend further diagnostic tests, such as an MRI or a nerve conduction study, to assess the status of the nerve.
In the meantime, managing discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers, maintaining good oral hygiene, and following your dentist's post-operative care instructions are essential. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased swelling, redness, or discharge, contact your dentist immediately.
In summary, while numbness after wisdom tooth extraction can be a common occurrence, prolonged symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any serious complications. Your recovery will depend on the extent of nerve involvement, and with appropriate care, many patients do experience improvement over time.
