Do enzyme tablets affect the menstrual cycle?

I recently started taking enzyme tablets recommended by a pharmacist.
Initially, my bowel movements were normal, but after a few days, I experienced diarrhea with watery stools.
As a result, my menstrual period was delayed by five days.
Today, due to bloating and nausea, I went to the gynecologist for a pregnancy test, and the doctor said I am not pregnant.
They believe the enzyme tablets upset my stomach.
However, I would like to ask if gastrointestinal disturbances can affect the menstrual cycle?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it generally does not affect health.
However, if your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Digestive enzymes are supplements that can aid in the breakdown of food and improve digestion. They are often recommended for individuals who experience digestive issues such as bloating, gas, or irregular bowel movements. However, the relationship between digestive enzymes and the menstrual cycle is not straightforward and can be influenced by various factors.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that the menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, primarily estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are produced by the ovaries and are influenced by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in the brain. Any significant changes in the body that affect hormonal balance can potentially impact the menstrual cycle.

In your case, you mentioned experiencing diarrhea after taking digestive enzyme tablets. Diarrhea can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, which may affect overall health and, in some cases, hormonal regulation. When the body is under stress, whether from gastrointestinal distress or dehydration, it can lead to disruptions in the menstrual cycle. Stress can cause the hypothalamus to alter the release of hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, potentially leading to delayed periods.

Additionally, digestive issues can also lead to changes in appetite and nutrient absorption. If your body is not absorbing essential nutrients properly due to digestive disturbances, this could further impact hormonal balance and menstrual regularity. For instance, deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc, can affect reproductive health and menstrual cycles.

Moreover, the gastrointestinal system and the reproductive system are interconnected through the gut-brain axis. The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in overall health, including hormonal balance. An imbalance in gut bacteria due to digestive issues can also influence hormonal levels, potentially leading to menstrual irregularities.

It is also worth noting that stress and anxiety related to health concerns can further exacerbate menstrual irregularities. If you are feeling anxious about your digestive issues or the delay in your period, this psychological stress can also contribute to hormonal fluctuations.

In summary, while digestive enzymes themselves are not directly linked to menstrual cycle regulation, the gastrointestinal disturbances they may cause can indirectly affect your menstrual cycle. If you are experiencing ongoing digestive issues or menstrual irregularities, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They can help assess your symptoms, review your dietary supplements, and provide guidance on managing both your digestive health and menstrual cycle. Additionally, if you continue to experience diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, it may be necessary to discontinue the digestive enzymes and explore alternative solutions for your digestive health.
