Fistula surgery
Hello, Dr.
Ke.
We would like to inquire if there are hospitals in the Sanmin District of Kaohsiung that accept National Health Insurance for the treatment of fistulas.
We couldn't find any information on this.
We only found a type of electrocautery treatment available, but local clinics charge 1,000 NT dollars per injection out of pocket.
Is there no coverage under National Health Insurance for this?

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
Answer: Fistula treatments are covered by health insurance.
Please search online for "Kaohsiung Sanmin District Colorectal Surgery," where you can find many physicians to choose from.
Electrocautery treatment is not currently a mainstream treatment method in the medical field, and I personally do not recommend patients to undergo this type of treatment.

More Info
Finding affordable fistula surgery options in Kaohsiung can be a challenging task, especially when navigating the complexities of healthcare coverage and available treatments. Fistulas, which are abnormal connections between two body parts, often require surgical intervention for effective treatment. In Taiwan, the National Health Insurance (NHI) system covers a wide range of medical procedures, including surgeries for fistulas, but the availability of these services can vary by hospital and region.
In Kaohsiung, particularly in the Sanmin District, there are several hospitals that are part of the NHI system where you can seek treatment for a fistula. Major hospitals such as Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and E-Da Hospital are known for their comprehensive surgical services and should be able to provide the necessary care for fistula management. It is advisable to contact these hospitals directly to inquire about their specific services related to fistula surgery and whether they accept NHI for the procedure.
Regarding the treatment options, you mentioned the availability of electrocautery (電燒) as a treatment method. This technique is often used for various surgical procedures, including the treatment of fistulas. However, the cost of such treatments can vary significantly, especially in private clinics where out-of-pocket expenses may apply. The price you mentioned, NT$1,000 per injection, suggests that this may be a non-surgical option or a part of a more extensive treatment plan that may not be fully covered by NHI.
To ensure you receive the most cost-effective treatment, consider the following steps:
1. Consult with a Specialist: Schedule an appointment with a gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon at one of the aforementioned hospitals. They can provide a thorough evaluation of your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment options.
2. Inquire About Coverage: During your consultation, ask specifically about NHI coverage for fistula surgery and any associated treatments. The healthcare provider should be able to clarify what is covered under the NHI and what costs you may be responsible for.
3. Explore Hospital Options: If one hospital does not provide the necessary services or coverage, do not hesitate to explore other hospitals in the area. Each facility may have different specialties and capabilities regarding fistula treatment.
4. Seek Financial Assistance: If you find that the costs are still prohibitive, inquire about financial assistance programs that may be available through the hospital or local health services. Some hospitals offer payment plans or financial counseling for patients in need.
5. Community Resources: Look into community health resources or support groups in Kaohsiung that may provide additional information or assistance regarding affordable healthcare options.
In summary, while there are options for fistula surgery covered by NHI in Kaohsiung, it is essential to do thorough research and consult with healthcare professionals to find the most suitable and affordable treatment for your condition. Don't hesitate to reach out to multiple hospitals and specialists to ensure you receive the best care possible.
