Can I still grow taller?

I started growing taller in sixth grade, but it seems like my height hasn't changed much since the second year of junior high.
I'm currently around 172 cm and have armpit hair.
Can I still grow taller? (My goal is 175-178 cm.)

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/01/14

Boys generally can continue to grow until around the age of 15, after which further observation may be warranted.

The question of whether you can still grow taller as a teenager is a common concern among adolescents, especially during the critical growth periods of puberty. At 14 years old and standing at 172 cm, it’s understandable to wonder if you can reach your goal height of 175-178 cm.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that growth in height is primarily determined by the growth plates in your bones, which are areas of developing cartilage located at the ends of long bones. During puberty, these growth plates are still open, allowing for continued growth. However, as you approach the end of puberty, these plates gradually close, leading to a halt in height increase.
Typically, boys experience their most significant growth spurts between the ages of 12 and 16, with most of their height increase occurring during this time. Since you mentioned that you have started to notice changes such as the development of body hair, it indicates that you are likely in the midst of puberty, which is a good sign that you may still have some growth potential left.
To assess your growth potential more accurately, you might consider a few factors:
1. Genetics: Your height is heavily influenced by your parents' heights. If your father is tall, there’s a good chance you may inherit similar traits.
2. Bone Age Assessment: A doctor can perform an X-ray of your hand and wrist to determine your bone age. If your bone age is younger than your chronological age, it suggests that you may still have time to grow.

3. Nutrition: Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in growth. A balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other essential nutrients supports bone health and growth. Foods like dairy products, leafy greens, lean meats, and nuts are beneficial.

4. Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity, especially activities that promote stretching and posture, can help maximize your growth potential. Sports like basketball, swimming, and even yoga can be beneficial.

5. Sleep: Adequate sleep is vital for growth. Growth hormone is primarily secreted during sleep, so ensuring you get enough rest is crucial.

6. Health Conditions: If you have any underlying health issues or hormonal imbalances, these could affect your growth. It’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

In conclusion, while it’s difficult to predict exactly how much taller you will grow, there is still a possibility that you can reach your goal height of 175-178 cm, especially if your growth plates are still open. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep, will support your growth potential. If you have ongoing concerns about your height or growth, consider discussing them with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice and possibly conduct a bone age assessment to give you a clearer picture of your growth potential. Remember, everyone's growth pattern is unique, and patience is key during this developmental phase.
