Skin allergies and other symptoms?
Dr.
Zheng: I have a few questions.
My neck, abdomen, legs, and hands have red, itchy spots that swell after scratching.
What could these symptoms indicate? Additionally, I have a hard growth on my finger that gradually increases in size but does not move.
When I cut it off, it grows back! What could this symptom be? Lastly, I have small red dots appearing on my body, about seven or eight in total.
Could you please help me understand these issues? Thank you! Best regards, James.
James, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2000/11/20

More Info
Dear James,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your skin symptoms. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a variety of skin issues, including redness, itching, and the formation of hard growths. Let's break down your symptoms and explore potential causes and solutions.
1. Redness and Itching: The symptoms you describe—redness and itching on your neck, abdomen, legs, and hands—could be indicative of several conditions, including allergic reactions, eczema, or even hives (urticaria). Allergic reactions can occur due to various triggers such as food, environmental factors (like pollen or dust mites), or contact with irritants (like soaps or detergents). Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic condition characterized by dry, itchy skin that can flare up due to environmental changes or irritants. Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear suddenly and may resolve on their own.
2. Hard Growth on Finger: The hard growth you mentioned on your finger could be a number of things, including a common wart (caused by the human papillomavirus), a callus (thickened skin due to friction), or a benign growth such as a dermatofibroma. If it continues to grow and is bothersome, it would be advisable to consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and potential treatment options.
3. Small Red Dots: The small red dots you see on your skin could be petechiae (tiny spots caused by bleeding under the skin), or they could be folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), or even small allergic reactions. The fact that they are few in number and not widespread is a good sign, but if they persist or change, it would be wise to seek medical advice.
Treatment and Management
- Moisturizers: Regardless of the specific diagnosis, maintaining skin hydration is crucial. Use a fragrance-free moisturizer regularly, especially after bathing, to help combat dryness and irritation.
- Topical Steroids: If your skin is inflamed and itchy, a mild topical steroid cream may help reduce inflammation and relieve itching. However, it’s important to use these under the guidance of a healthcare professional, especially if you are considering using them on sensitive areas or for prolonged periods.
- Avoiding Triggers: Identifying and avoiding potential allergens or irritants is key. Keeping a diary of your symptoms and any new products or foods you introduce can help pinpoint triggers.
- Consultation with a Dermatologist: Given the variety of symptoms you are experiencing, a consultation with a dermatologist would be beneficial. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly conduct allergy testing, and provide a tailored treatment plan.
Prevention
To prevent future flare-ups, consider the following:
- Gentle Skin Care: Use mild, fragrance-free soaps and cleansers. Avoid hot showers, which can further dry out the skin.
- Allergy Management: If you suspect allergies, consider allergy testing to identify specific triggers. This can help you avoid allergens in the future.
- Environmental Control: Keep your living environment free from dust and allergens. Using air purifiers and regularly cleaning can help reduce exposure.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be concerning, many skin conditions can be effectively managed with the right approach. I encourage you to seek professional medical advice to ensure you receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Your skin health is important, and addressing these issues early can lead to better outcomes.
